KENOSHA, Wis. – Augustana suffered cold bats in a game one loss and a survived short goose delay in the night cap to salvage a doubleheader split with Carthage Saturday at Augie Schmidt Field. Coach Greg Wallace's club is now 22-10 on the year and 11-6 in the CCIW, a half-game behind league-leading North Park. Carthage moves to 16-17 overall and 7-10 in the conference. The Vikings and Red Men are scheduled to play a single game in Kenosha, Wisconsin at noon on Sunday, April 27.

CARTHAGE 4, AUGUSTANA 0

Augustana had no answer for Carthage starter Josh Daniels in the opener. The Vikings managed just three singles—by Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.), Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.)—in a 4-0 loss and had no hits after the fourth inning. Only in the eighth, when they benefited from an error and a walk, did they have more than one base runner reach.

The Red Men gave Daniels all the offense he would need in the bottom of the first. After a walk and a single, Drew Bailey touched Augustana starter Seth Davis (Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) for a two-run double. Nick Schmidlkofer added an RBI single and the hosts led 3-0 after one.

Schmidlkofer had a leadoff single in the fourth and eventually scored the game's final run on a Graham Wick ground out.

Both Davis, who fell to 3-2 and Daniels, who upped his record to 3-2, went the distance. The Viking southpaw surrendered nine hits and one base-on-balls while fanning 11. Daniels walked two and struck out six.

AUGUSTANA 7, CARTHAGE 4

After Augustana starter Chris Sauer (Rock Canyon HS, Littleton, Colo.) left the bases full of Red Men in the first, the hosts took a 1-0 lead against him in the second inning of the night cap. Sauer retired the first two batters without incident, but Chris Tydd beat out a tapper down the third base line and moved all the way to third when Kyle Lenihan's (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) throw got away down the right field line. Matt Richer singled Tydd in to give Carthage an early lead.

After 12 scoreless innings on the day, the Vikings finally got on the board in the fourth. Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) had a leadoff single to center and stole second on a botched pickoff attempt. He moved to third when Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) had to be thrown out at first following a dropped third strike. That brought Stewart to the plate and the senior first baseman grounded an RBI single to center through a drawn-in infield to plate Jasper with the tying run.

The Augustana bats busted loose for five runs in the fifth. Sophomore Alex Fluehr (Harlem HS, Loves Park) started things by legging out an infield hit with one out. Van Duyne was hit by an Andrew Arenson pitch and Jasper walked to load the bases. Fifer then delivered a two-run single to center and Stewart sliced a two-run double down the left field line to put the Vikings up 5-1. Stewart scored the final run of the frame on John Swiderski's (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) fielder's choice grounder.

Carthage answered with a run in the fifth and added two more in the seventh on Marc Mantucci's two-run double to get within 6-4. However, the Vikings got one of those back in the top of the ninth on singles by Jasper and Fifer and a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Stewart.

Sophomore Zach Morgenstern (Peoria Notre Dame HS, East Peoria, Ill.) came on in relief of Sauer to start the ninth. With a one on and one out and Mike Pugliese at the plate, a goose wandered onto the field causing a short delay, which ended when Carthage Head Coach Augie Schmidt chased the bird from the premises. Morgenstern walked Pugliese, but retired the final two batters to earn his third save of the season.

Sauer gave up eight hits and three earned runs, walking two and fanning six to earn his fifth win in six decisions. Fifer was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Stewart was 2-for-3 with four driven in. Jasper went 2-for-4 and scored three times.
