MOLINE, Ill. – Augustana rebounded from a 7-4 game one loss, using some early offense and Walter White's (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) first relief appearance of the year to take the night cap of Friday's doubleheader with North Park 6-5 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Coach Greg Wallace's club is now 19-9 on the year and 9-5 in the CCIW. North Park is 20-10 overall and 10-4 in the conference. The teams will finish the series with a single game in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m.

NORTH PARK 7, AUGUSTANA 4

North Park scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth inning of game one to take a 7-4 decision.

Trailing 4-1 going to the bottom of the seventh, Augustana scored three runs to tie it. Sophomore Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) led off with a double to right center and freshman pinch hitter Mitchel Ruh (Hinkley-Big Rock HS, Big Rock, Ill.) moved him to third with a single to right. Senior Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Gingerich to make it 4-2. A Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) single moved Van Duyne to third  and Danny Fifer's (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) sacrifice fly to left scored him to get Augustana within a run. Jasper took off for second on a steal attempt and got all the way to third when pitcher Max Peterson's pickoff throw to first got away. Senior Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) then dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line to score Jasper with the tying run.

However, a walk, an error and Tommy Endres' two-run single in the top of the eighth produced a pair of unearned runs and the visitors took advantage of three more Augustana miscues in the ninth to add the game's final run, which was also unearned.

Singles by Jasper and Fifer in the third inning, sandwiched around a passed ball, gave Augustana a 1-0 lead. North Park took its first lead with three runs off starter Seth Davis (Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) in the top of the fifth and added another run on Joe Belmonte's RBI single in the seventh.

Sophomore Darwin Townsend (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) suffered the loss despite not allowing a hit or earned run in his one inning of work. Peterson finished up with 2 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win for North Park. Stewart and Jasper each had two hits, while Jasper scored twice and Fifer knocked in a pair.

AUGUSTANA 6, NORTH PARK 5

Five runs in the first two innings and another in the fourth held up as the hosts hung on for a 6-5 game two win. White went the final 2 2/3 innings in his first relief appearance to save the contest for winner Chris Sauer (Rock Canyon HS, Littleton, Colo.) (4-1).

Jasper and Fifer had back-to-back, one-out infield hits in the first and Stewart delivered Jasper with an RBI single up the middle. After a double steal by Fifer and Stewart and a walk to junior Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Gove, Ill.), junior Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) plated Fifer with a grounder to third, giving Augustana a 2-0 lead after one.

Wallace's crew went right back to work in the second, getting three more off North Park starter Alex Silverthorne. Gingerich led off and sliced a double down the left field line, eventually scoring on an RBI single by Van Duyne. Fifer also knocked in a run with a single and another scored on a double play grounder off the bat of Stewart. Singles by Van Duyne and Fifer produced another run in the fourth inning for a 6-0 Augustana lead.

Sauer cruised through the first five innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while fanning five. He ran into trouble in the sixth, though, surrendering four runs before exiting in favor of freshman Kyle McGinley (Mullen HS, Denver, Colo.). Brett Bernal's single was the big hit in the frame.

McGinley retired the first batter in the seventh, but a single, an error and a walk loaded the bases, prompting Wallace to call on White. The sophomore right-hander got Endres to chop to Lenihan, who stepped on third for the second out and fired to Tenerelli, who applied the tag on Mario Creecy at the plate to end the threat.

North Park plated an unearned run in the ninth, but White retired the side without further incident to earn his first save.

Fifer had three hits and two RBI. Van Duyne, Jasper and Gingerich each had a pair of knocks as well.
