Box Score MOLINE, Ill. – Junior
Kevin Hodgman's
(Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) strong mound performance and junior
Danny Fifer's
(Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) timely double proved to be the keys in Augustana's 8-4 non-conference win over Loras. The Vikings beat the Duhawks on Wednesday, April 16 at a windy Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field in Moline, Illinois.
Hodgman got the start for
Greg Wallace's team and came up with a much needed inning-eating performance for a pitching staff that went 18 innings on Saturday and another 18 innings yesterday. He came out and tossed eight innings and only gave up four runs despite surrendering 14 hits. Hodgman walked just one and struck out five as he picked up his first win of the season. The Duhawks stranded eight runners and had three runners cut down on the bases.
Freshman
Cooper SantAmour (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) came in and worked a scoreless ninth to secure the victory, allowing one hit but striking out the final batter.
It was Fifer who produced the biggest hit of the night when he delivered a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning that gave the Vikings a 5-4 lead.
The inning opened with a single to left-center by junior
Jacques Camalick (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.). He moved to second on a single by sophomore
Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.). Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Alex Fluehr (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.). Senior
Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore
Jeff Prior (Rock Canyon HS, Lone Tree, Colo.) singled home Camalick to make it 4-2 and then Fifer blasted a double to center field that plated three and suddenly Augustana led 5-4. Fifer came home on a single off the bat of junior
Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) to make it 6-4.
Tenerelli's two-out, two-run double in the eight gave the Vikings some breathing room and accounted for the final score.
Augustana had 16 hits off a total of five Loras pitchers with Fifer going three for five with three runs scored and three runs-batted-in. Senior
Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) was three for five with a run scored and an RBI and Gingerich was three for four with a run scored. Tenerelli had two hits and three RBI while Prior added two hits, a run scored and an RBI and Camalick contributed a pair of hits.
Augustana is now 18-8 overall and has won nine of its last 12 games. Loras falls to 13-11. The Vikings will host North Park in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header on Friday, April 18 at 1:00 p.m.
