MOLINE, Ill. – After having this past Sunday's game postponed by rain, the Augustana baseball team finished up its weekend series with Illinois Wesleyan Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Titans 11-8 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. In Tuesday night's regularly scheduled contest, a complete-game effort from pitcher Jamie Rammel (McHenry HS, McHenry, Ill.) led the Vikings to a 9-2 win over Knox.  By the end of the evening, Augustana had improved to 17-8 overall and 8-4 in the CCIW. Coach Greg Wallace's club is back in action on Wednesday, April 16, at home against Loras.

AUGUSTANA 11, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 8

The Vikings pounded out 17 hits in the day's first contest to take the third game of the season series with Illinois Wesleyan (16-9, 10-2). They staked starting pitcher Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, stringing together six consecutive singles after Titan starter Robert Romano had retired the first two batters. A pair of Illinois Wesleyan errors helped the Augustana cause as well.

IWU scored an unearned run off White in the second and Bobby Czarnowski's two-run homer to right in the fifth cut the Viking lead to 4-3. Augustana had an opportunity to extend the advantage in the bottom of the fifth, but a one-out, bases-loaded dropped third strike turned into a bizarre inning-ending double play.

An error, a single and Adam Glogovsky's two-run double to left center gave the Titans a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth, but the hosts answered with four runs in the bottom half. Junior Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) drew a leadoff walk and scored on Nick Tenerelli's (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) two-out RBI single. Sophomore Jeff Prior (Rock Canyon HS, Lone Tree, Colo.) plated Tenerelli with an RBI single and classmate Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) knocked in two runs with a single to put Augustana up 8-5 after six.

In the seventh, senior Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) led off with a bunt single and Jasper followed with a single to center. Junior Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) reached to load the bases when IWU reliever Adam Siefert slipped attempting to field his sacrifice bunt. Grant Stewart's (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) sacrifice fly to center and another RBI single by Tenerelli made it 10-5 Augustana. Tenerelli scored the Vikings' final run on a Titan error.

IWU scored three runs in the eighth inning, but sophomore right-hander Zach Morgenstern (Peoria Notre Dame HS, East Peoria, Ill.) came out of the pen to get the final four outs and earn his second save of the season.

White battled through 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs, only three of which were earned. He walked three and fanned four and improved to 4-0 on the season. John Frueh suffered the loss for Illinois Wesleyan. Stewart, Tenerelli, Prior and Gingerich each had three of the Vikings' 17 hits and Lenihan added a pair. Tenerelli scored three runs and drove in three more. Jasper shone on defense, making a pair of outstanding catches in right field.

AUGUSTANA 9, KNOX 2

In the second game, singles by the first two Knox hitters, followed by a pair of Augustana errors, allowed the Prairie Fire to take a 2-0 lead against Rammel in the top of the first. However, that would be the last damage they would do, as the sophomore right-hander handcuffed them on just three singles—two of which didn't leave the infield—the rest of the way.

The Vikings tied it with two runs in the bottom of the first and gave Rammel all the runs he would need with three more in the second. Fifer and sophomore catcher John Swiderski (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) had RBI singles in the first. Fifer added another in the second Stewart drove in a pair with a double off the wall in center.

Knox reliever Bryan Leslie kept the Augustana bats quiet through the sixth inning, but he exited to start the seventh and the Vikings got to Marty Salazar for a run. Another Stewart double, this one off the wall in right, scored sophomore Brandon Tidaback (Coal City HS, Morris, Ill.) to make it 6-2. The final three runs of the night scored in the eighth on an RBI single by Alex Fluehr (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) and a two-run double by Fifer.

Rammel allowed just five hits and two unearned runs in winning his first decision of the season. He walked none and fanned four. Fifer finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four driven in. Van Duyne and Jasper each had two hits and two runs scored. Stewart had two hits and three RBI and Lenihan had a pair of knocks as well.
