Undefeated Vikings take Carthage by storm

Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) tallied her first of four goals just 1:14 into the contest for the undefeated Augustana women's lacrosse team on Tuesday, April 15th in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Head coach Sara Tisdale's squad extended its victory streak to 12 and moved its Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference record to a perfect 6-0 as the Lady Reds fell to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the league.
 
Rebecca Pollard (Westfield HS, Carmel, Ind.) found the back of the net to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage but the Lady Reds fired back with two scores of their own to even the contest at 2-2 with 20:51 left in the half. Just 32 seconds later Stelzer tallied the go-ahead goal and gave the Vikings a lead they would not relinquish.
 
Tisdale's crew closed out the half with eight straight goals for a 10-2 advantage on the scoreboard.  The blue and gold scored the first three goals of the second half to extend the unanswered streak to 11 over a 25 minute span. Carthage scored three of the next four goals to make the score 14-5 but Augustana answered with three straight goals for a 17-5 advantage with 6:37 remaining. Carthage scored twice more as the clock read 3:55 and 0:01 with a Vikings goal between the two for the final 18-7 margin.
 
Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) led all scorers with five goals and a pair of assists for seven points while Stelzer tallied four goals and a couple of assists for six points. Pollard finished with two goals and three assists while teammate Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill) found the back of the net twice and registered an assist. Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) both tallied a pair of scores for the Vikings while Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) recorded a goal and an assist in the contest.
 
Augustana outshot the hosts by a 29-9 first half margin and 43-11 over the course of the match. Tisdale's club held a 25-12 advantage in the ground balls column as Maduro and Nolan each picked up four. The Vikings turned the ball over just nine times while the Lady Reds gave it up 15 times. The blue and gold controlled 16 of the contest's 27 draws and Nolan registered all but three of the draw controls for Augustana.
 
In the goal for the Vikings Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) recorded six saves while allowing just seven goals to move her record to 10-0 on the season.
 
The undefeated Vikings play host to North Central on Tuesday, April 22nd at Thorson-Lucken Field. The match is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start. The series record between North Central and Augustana favors the Vikings by a 3-0 margin, including a pair of 2013 victories by a single goal. The Cardinals are currently 5-4 overall and 4-1 in MWLC play after falling to Concordia (Wis.) by a 13-14 margin.
