ADRIAN, Mich. – A six-minute span that covered part of the third and fourth periods proved to be the difference on Saturday, March 8 as Augustana dropped a close 14-13 decision to Adrian in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The defeat was the second close contest in a week that the Vikings lost to a Michigan school. Last Saturday, March 1, Augustana fell to Albion 8-5 in a game played in Albion, Michigan.

With 2:23 left in the third period sophomore Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) tied things up at 9-9 with freshman Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.) picking up an assist. Adrian went ahead 10-9 on a goal by Eric Fanell with 1:53 left in the third. In the fourth, the Bulldogs scored three goals in a span of just 55 seconds to vault in front 13-9 with 10:50 left to play.

The Vikings weren't through, however, as Gleason scored with 9:10 remaining, again assisted by Hawkins, to make it 13-10. Gleason found the nets with 6:22 to play, this time unassisted, to bring Augustana to within two (13-11). Junior Jesse Nagelberg (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) used a Hawkins assist with 5:29 to go to cut the lead to one (13-12).

Adrian got a goal at 3:42 from Doug Boyd to make it 14-12 and Gleason gave the Vikings hope with his fifth goal of the game at 2:25 to trim the margin to 14-13. Nagelberg assisted on Gleason's final goal.

Augustana won the ensuing faceoff and the two teams exchanged turnovers before Nagelberg's shot that would have tied the game with 1:26 left hit the post. The errant shot was corralled by the Bulldogs and the Vikings did not get another shot off.

Adrian jumped out to an early 3-2 lead but three straight goals by the visitors gave Augustana a 5-3 advantage. Gleason scored with 4:09 left in the first and junior Vincent Giglierano (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) tallied at 1:08 to make it 4-3 and Hawkins scored early in the second (10:01) to put the Vikings on top 5-3. At halftime the game was tied 6-6.

Gleason led Augustana with five goals and an assist by sophomore Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) scored four times and Nagelberg twice with two assists.

Junior goalkeeper Cody Burgdorff (Peak-to-Peak HS, Lafayette, Colo.) had seven saves and faced a total of 34 shots in the game. The two teams were fairly even in shots with Adrian launching 34 and the Vikings 33. The Bulldogs won the battle of ground balls, however, by a margin of 26-16.

Augustana, now 1-2 on the season, will face the University of Dubuque in the home opener at Thorson-Lucken Field on Wednesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m.
