DANVILLE, Ky. – Junior
Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) scored three of her game-high four goals in the second half Wednesday as Augustana broke open a game that was tied at halftime, pulling away for a 12-6 win at Centre. The 28th-ranked Vikings improved to 3-0 on the year while the host Colonels suffered their first loss after two wins.
Stelzer's first goal came with 3:43 left in the first half and gave Augustana its first lead at 4-3. It was a free position goal with the Vikings a player up. Centre's Jacqueline Anderson scored with 37 seconds left to send the teams to the locker room tied at 4-4.
Sophomore
Rebecca Pollard (Westfield HS, Carmel, Ind.) and
Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) each scored off
Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) assists in the first two minutes of the second half to give Augustana a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Colonel Audrey Powers stemmed the tide temporarily, getting Centre to within 6-5 with 21:46 remaining, but Viking freshman
Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) scored her second goal of the game to put the visitors up by two.
Kargl scored off a Pollard assist at 7:46 and Meg Hawthorne fed Emily Madden for a Centre goal at 6:59 and Augustana led 8-6.
Coach Sara Tisdale's squad put the game out of reach in the final five and a half minutes. Stelzer had an unassisted goal at 5:27. Pollard scored with the help of another Kargl assist with 4:48 left and Stelzer finished off the scoring with two more goals, the first off a feed from sophomore
Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.).
The Colonels led for much of the first half. Madden and Powers each scored to put the hosts up 2-0. A Kargl power play goal and an unassisted Nolan score tied the game with 14:42 to play before halftime.
In addition to Stelzer's four goals, Kargl, Pollard, Mayer and Nolan each scored twice. Kargl dealt out a game-high three assists, Handrahan two and Pollard one. Nolan had a game-high seven draw controls and, along with Mayer, forced a pair of turnovers. Junior
Emily Pavlik (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) had a team-high three ground balls and also controlled six draws.
Sophomore
Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) saw her first action of the year in goal and went the distance, recording 10 saves to get the win.
The Vikings are in action next on Thursday, March 13 when they take on Kalamazoo in Kalamazoo, Michigan at 5:00 p.m. central time.
