CLERMONT, Fla. – 15th-ranked Augustana suffered its second loss of the spring Tuesday, falling 6-1 to Adrian, but bounced back with a 7-1 win over Susquehanna. Now 6-2 on the year, the Vikings will wrap up play in Florida on Wednesday, February 5, taking on Thiel and Misericordia at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., respectively, central time.
ADRIAN 6, AUGUSTANA 1
Augustana managed just four hits and committed three errors in the day's first game, a 6-1 loss to Adrian.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead off Viking starter
Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) in the top of the first. A pair of singles and an Augustana error accounted for the game's first run.
In the bottom half, junior left fielder
Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) led off with her third triple of the season and scored the tying run on an RBI single by junior second baseman
Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.). That would be Augustana's only score of the game as the Vikings mustered just a pair of singles by Behnke and senior shortstop
Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) the rest of the way.
Adrian added single runs in the third and fifth off Anderson and one in the sixth and two in the seventh off junior reliever
Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.).
Anderson took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year. Kaitlyn Lock went the distance to get the win for the Bulldogs, walking two and fanning seven. Lock, along with teammate Jessica Sarch, had two hits as well.
AUGUSTANA 7, SUSQUEHANNA 1
Augustana's second game of the day was also tied 1-1after an inning, but this time, it was the Vikings that pulled away for the win.
Behnke led off the game with a single, stole second and eventually came around to score the game's first run on Anderson's RBI groundout. Susquehanna parlayed three hits and an Augustana error into the tying run in the bottom of the first. However, that would be all the Crusaders would get against Viking starter
Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.), who allowed just a pair of singles the rest of the way.
Teson's two-run triple was the big hit in a three-run second inning for Augustana. Behnke also delivered a run with a sacrifice fly to left.
The score stayed at 4-1 until the Vikings broke it open with three more in the seventh. Behnke again got things started, pulling a single to right. Junior catcher
Christina Pagan (Normal West HS, Normal, Ill.) knocked her in with a double to left and scored herself on a Wiersema groundout. Sophomore
Jennifer Gray (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) singled in pinch-runner
Amanda Ebert (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) with the final run.
Hintz won her fourth straight decision this year, going the distance and allowing four hits and no walks while fanning a half dozen. Pagan was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Watson and Gray had two hits each. Behnke went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one driven and Teson was 1-for-3 with one scored and two knocked in.
