CAROL STREAM, Ill. – Pitchers owned the day Saturday as Augustana and Wheaton split a twin bill at Lee Pfund Stadium. Viking sophomore Chris Sauer (Rock Canyon HS, Littleton, Colo.) and the Thunder's Josh Arevalo matched complete-game performances in the opener, with Wheaton prevailing 1-0. In the nightcap, Augustana sophomore Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) bettered them both, facing just two batters over the minimum in a one-hit gem as the Vikings won 5-0. Augustana improved to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in the CCIW, while the Thunder is now 11-6 on the year and 1-2 in the league.

WHEATON 1, AUGUSTANA 0

Sauer and Arevalo locked up in a pitcher's duel in the opener. Justin Swider's base hit in the bottom of the sixth plated Josh Kimmel with the game's only run as the Thunder came out on top 1-0.

Each team was scoreless with just two hits through five. The Vikings put their best threat together in the top of the sixth. Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) and Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) had back-to-back two-out singles, but after a Fifer steal put runners on second and third, Arevalo fanned Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) to end the inning. In the bottom half, Kimmel drew a one-out walk. Matt Schappell moved him to third with a single to right and Swider brought him home with a single to left. Sauer got the next two batters to fly out to avoid further damage.

Augustana couldn't do anything with one-out singles in the seventh and eighth. In the ninth, Fifer led off with a single to left and was run for by sophomore Brandon Tidaback (Coal City HS, Morris, Ill.). Tidaback got into scoring position with a one-out stolen base, but Arevalo slammed the door, retiring pinch-hitter Michael Baugh (Sherrard HS, Matherville, Ill.) and Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) to finish off the complete game shutout.

Sauer suffered his first loss against two wins. He went the full eight innings, allowing just six singles while walking one and fanning three. Arevalo gave up seven hits and walked none with eight strikeouts to improve to 4-0.

Fifer went 3-for-4 for Augustana and Schappell did the same for the Thunder.

AUGUSTANA 5, WHEATON 0

White was the story in the nightcap. The only hit he gave up was a Schappell single leading off the fourth inning. He retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced. Johnny Peltz, who reached on a one-out error in the ninth, was the only Thunder base runner over the last five innings. White walked one and fanned five in his second complete game to improve to 3-0 on the year.

The Vikings jumped out in front with a run in the top of the second. Lenihan drew a leadoff walk from Wheaton starter Trey Martin and was forced at second on Nick Tenerelli's (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) grounder to short. Tidaback dropped down a bunt single and he and Tenerelli moved to second and third on a Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) ground out. Sophomore Alex Fluehr (Harlem HS, Loves park, Ill.) followed with a grounder to third that the Thunder couldn't handle, allowing Tenerelli to come home with the game's first run.

Augustana added three runs in the fourth. Tenerelli walked to lead off the inning. Tidaback laid down a sacrifice which Martin misplayed, putting runners on first and second. Gingerich doubled to left, scoring Tenerelli and Tidaback came home on a Fluehr sacrifice fly to right. Senior Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) singled in Gingerich to make it 4-0.

Doubles by Fifer and Lenihan in the seventh made it 5-0.

Lenihan finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Gingerich went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in and Tenerelli was 1-for-3 and scored twice.

Coach Greg Wallace's Vikings play another CCIW doubleheader on Tuesday, April 1. North Central will be the opponent at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
