ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – 21st-ranked Augustana braved frigid conditions Wednesday night at Carver Field to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from St. Ambrose 13-3 and 3-0. Junior second baseman
Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) went 4-for-4 and scored four runs on the day and sophomore lefty
Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) threw six two-hit innings in the nightcap. The Vikings improved to 13-5 on the year, while the Bees dropped to 9-7.
AUGUSTANA 13, ST. AMBROSE 3 The Vikings took advantage of 10 walks and 19 illegal pitch calls to end a wild opener in four and a half innings by a score of 13-3.
The hosts scored five runs in the first with the benefit of just one hit, a
Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) RBI double. Bees' starter Sam Flerlage issued five base-on-balls and was called for nine illegal pitches in the frame.
An infield hit by Teson was the only one of the Augustana second inning, but another walk and an error played a role in the Vikings plating three more runs.
In the bottom of the third, four more walks and a pair of hits that didn't leave the infield led to five more runs as Augustana extended the lead to 13-0. St. Ambrose got to sophomore reliever
Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.) for three runs in the top of the fourth, but freshman
Krista Dawson (Niles West HS, Lincolnwood, Ill.) set the Bees down without a run in the fifth to sew up the win.
Augustana starter
Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) went the first two innings, allowing one hit while fanning two to earn her ninth win of the season against just one defeat. Flerlage went the distance for St. Ambrose and fell to 4-3 on the year.
Teson went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Anderson scored twice to lead the offense.
AUGUSTANA 3, ST. AMBROSE 0 Anderson was in control from the start in game two. She allowed just two hits and no walks while fanning two in six innings.
The Vikings got Anderson the only run she would need in the bottom of the second. Rehmert led off with another double, moved to third on a
Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) grounder and scored the game's first run on
Christina Pagan's
(Normal West HS, Normal, Ill.) ground out to second.
Teson and senior shortstop
Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) started the third with back-to-back singles. Anderson reached on a fielder's choice which didn't yield an out and Rehmert delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right to score Teson. St. Ambrose ace Kathryn Brown pitched out of further trouble in the inning, stranding a pair of Augustana runners.
The Vikings added an unearned run in the fourth. Senior third baseman
Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) reached on an error to start the frame and moved to second on a
Jennifer Gray (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) sacrifice. One out later, Teson brought her home with an RBI single to left.
Hintz came on and threw a scoreless seventh to earn her first save of the season.
