Concordia's Danny Dahms scored at 3:35 of overtime in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference opener on Saturday, March 15 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
The Vikings led 3-0 with 6:26 remaining in the first quarter and 6-3 with 6:03 left in the second quarter before entering halftime up 7-5. Head coach
Kyle Hart's squad saw its lead grow to as many as five when the Vikings went up 11-6 in the third quarter. The Vikings were then outscored 4-1 in the final stanza. Clinging to a 13-12 lead, Augustana committed a crucial turnover late in regulation and the Falcons capitalized when Matt Garvey scored with just four seconds showing on the clock to send the game into overtime.
The Vikings were led in scoring by
Jesse Nagelberg (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) who tallied four goals in the match and added two of the team's five assists. Four Vikings scored a pair of goals on the afternoon, which included
Alexander Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.),
Jared Hawkins (Everett HS, Everett, Wash.),
Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kan.), and
Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.). Crescenti, Hawkins, and
Kevin Gleason (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) each tallied an assist as well.
Cody Burgdorff (Peak-to-Peak HS, Lafayette, Colo.) played the complete game in net for the Vikings and tallied 13 saves on the afternoon. Burgdorff's counter-part, Emmet O'Malley, recorded 14 saves.
Augustana was outshot 3-1 by the Falcons in the overtime period and 46-40 over the entire match. Concordia controlled the center circle winning 18 of the 28 face-offs on the afternoon and also recovered 45 ground balls to the Vikings' 37.
Coach Hart's club found themselves in the penalty box six times opposed to Concordia's nine visits. Concordia scored five man-up goals whereas the Vikings only scored two.
The Vikings do not take the field again until Sunday, March 23 when they head to Cincinnati, Ohio for an MLC match-up with Mount St. Joseph. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) face-off. Augustana's next home match is March 29 in an MLC contest with Defiance.
