AUGUSTANA 7, CAPITAL 0
Senior
Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) was in complete control from start to finish as she allowed just one walk and struck out five in tossing a no-hitter at Capital in a 7-0 Augustana victory. She moved her record to 2-0 on the season and got help from an offense that banged out 11 hits and scored in five different innings.
Senior shortstop
Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) led the offense with a three-for-three effort while junior leftfielder
Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) was two-for-four with four RBI and sophomore designated hitter
Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) went two-for-three with a run scored and sophomore center fielder
Jennifer Gray (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) had two hits and an RBI in four at-bats.
The Vikings put three runs on the board in the top of the second inning and that would be all the support Hintz would need. Anderson and junior catcher
Christina Pagan (Normal West HS, Normal, Ill.) each walked to lead things off. With one out senior third baseman
Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) singled to load the bases. Behnke's triple to left center field cleared the bases and gave Augustana a 3-0 lead.
In the third Watson led off with a walk and went to third on a one-out single to left by Anderson. She scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Pagan. The fourth provided a manufactured run for the Vikings. Tambling led off with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner, freshman
Ashley Stiver (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.). Stiver stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. In the meantime, Behnke walked and when she stole second, Stiver scored when the Crusaders failed to get Behnke at second.
With the score 5-0, Gray's RBI single plated junior pinch-runner
Cassie Saufley (Normal West HS, Hudson, Ill.) with a single in the fifth. The final run came in the seventh when Pagan singled to center field to lead off. She gave way to pinch runner
Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.), who eventually scored on Behnke's infield single.
AUGUSTANA 7, HANOVER 3
The Vikings scored in all six innings they batted, thanks to an offense that generated 10 hits in a 7-3 win over Hanover to move to 3-1 so far in the 2014 campaign. Anderson was the starting pitcher and she worked five innings and scattered eight hits and gave up two runs and picked up the victory, her first of the year against one loss. Junior
Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) came on in relief and struck out two in two innings.
Behnke led off the game for Augustana with a home run in the bottom of the first before Hanover tied things with a run in the top of the second. The Vikings answered with a run in the second when Wiersema singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and third on a single by Pagan. Pagan stole second and Wiersema scored on a throwing error on the play to make it 2-1.
Augustana added two in the third with Anderson starting things off with a single. After one out, Wiersema reached on an error and Anderson went to second. A passed ball moved each runner up one base and Pagan's single brought Anderson home and pushed Wiersema to third. Tambling hit a ball that was misplayed in the infield and Wiersema scored the second run of the inning. In the fourth junior
Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) led off with a single and came home on a single to left off the bat of senior first baseman
Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.).
After Hanover narrowed the gap to 5-2 with a single run in the top of the fifth, the Vikings answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Pagan led off with a bunt single and eventually scored on Behnke's double to center field. The last Augustana run came in the bottom of the sixth when Watson was hit by a pitch and came home on a single to left by Wiersema. Hanover scored a single run in the seventh but Wiersema was never in any real trouble and closed out the game and the 7-3 Viking victory.
Pagan led the offense with three hits in four at-bats while Behnke and Wiersema each had two hits. Behnke had a pair of RBI while Wiersema scored two runs and had an RBI.
