SEWANEE, Tenn. – Junior Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) scored six goals in the final 27:02 of play Thursday to lead Augustana to a 16-13 come-from-behind win over Sewanee in the Vikings' season opener at Puett Field. Augustana (1-0) rallied from a four-goal deficit with 20 minutes remaining to hand the Tigers their first loss in four games this season. The win also avenged a 17-16 setback to Sewanee in the first game in the history of the Viking program in 2012.

The visitors trailed 11-7 with less than 20 minutes on the clock, but Kargl scored consecutive free position goals less than a minute apart to get Augustana within two scores. After a Chelsea Staunton goal for the Tigers, Kargl scored again and then assisted on a Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) power play goal to cut the deficit to 12-11 with 9:02 left.

Sophomore Shelby Cosman's (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) unassisted goal at 7:09 drew the Vikings even and Kargl scored with an assist from Annie Hopkins (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) at 5:34 to give Coach Sara Tisdale's squad its first lead since 3-2 with more than 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Kargl scored off a Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) assist 32 seconds later and sophomore Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn  Woods, Ill.) extended Augustana's lead to 15-12 with a free position goal at the 3:23 mark.

Sewanee's Ellie Murphy stemmed the tide with a goal at 2:21, but only temporarily, as Hopkins scored her second goal of the game to account for the final.

The Vikings managed just one lead and a pair of ties in the first half. Sewanee scored six straight in a span of 5:05, with Sally Anne Greenwood's third goal in that stretch giving the Tigers their biggest lead of the night at 8-3. Augustana answered with three straight scores to cut the halftime deficit to 8-6. Sewanee scored three of the first four goals in the second half before the Vikings mounted their comeback.

Kargl added two assists to her game-high half dozen goals. Handrahan, Cosman, Hopkins and sophomore Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) each scored twice. Sophomore Rebecca Pollard (Westfield HS, Carmel, Ind.) had two assists as well. Junior Nattali Shelton (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) snared four ground balls, as did Nolan, who also had two caused turnovers and four draw controls.

Sophomore Cori Duncan (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) got her first career start in goal and recorded nine saves to get the win.

Augustana's southern tour continues with a game against the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels on Sunday, March 2 in Atlanta, Georgia. The opening draw for that contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. central time.
