DECATUR, Ill. – After enduring a four game losing streak, Augustana won its second straight road game in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action with a 76-59 trouncing of Millikin on Wednesday, February 12 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois. The Vikings sprinted out to a 34-15 first half lead thanks to a smothering defensive effort.
Augustana limited the hosts to just seven baskets on 25 attempts in the first 20 minutes for a paltry .280 field goal percentage. The Big Blue misfired on all four of its three point field goal attempts in the first half as well.
After leading just 6-4 with the game nearly five minutes old (15:17), the Vikings went on a 15-3 run to grab a 14 point lead (21-7) at 9:11. By halftime the advantage was 19 points (34-15) as Augustana closed the first half on a 13-8 run.
The lead grew as high as 29 points (69-40) with 6:34 left when sophomore
Jake Norcia (Highland Park HS, Highland Park, Ill.) hit a three point field goal. From that point, Millikin outscored the Vikings 19-7 to cut the final margin to 17 points.
Augustana had just one player in double figures and it was sophomore
Tayvian Johnson (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) with 12 points on a perfect four of four night from the field and a four of five performance from the free throw line. Johnson also had four rebounds and three assists.
Norcia was the next leading scorer as he had nine points in just 16 minutes of action as he hit three of five from three point range. He also had three assists. Junior
Mark Roth (Washington HS, Metamora, Ill.) and sophomores
Hunter Hill (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and
Ben Ryan (Washington HS, Washington, Ill.) each scored eight points. Sophomore
Brandon Motzel (Carmel Catholic HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) scored six points but led all rebounders with 10 while picking up three blocked shots.
Augustana shot .475 (29-61) from the floor and held a commanding 42-29 advantage in the rebounding department.
Millikin was led in scoring by Deavis Johnson with 13 points and he also topped all rebounders with 13.
The Vikings, now 17-6 overall and 7-5 in the CCIW will host Elmhurst on Saturday, February 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Carver Center. Millikin falls to 7-15 overall and 1-10 in league play.
