ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — In the 154th year of Augustana's existence, senior
Nathan Kyes (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) has the unique distinction of being the school's 154th Academic All-American. That honor was bestowed upon Kyes today when he was named to the
Capital One Academic All-American team in men's soccer. He was a second team selection.
Kyes was an integral part of the Vikings' success this year. He started every game and was a huge reason that Augustana allowed just 17 goals in 18 games for a 0.93 goals-against-average. The Vikings recorded seven shutouts this year and are finished with a 10-7-1 overall record and a 2-4-1 mark in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. He also scored one goal and notched one assist and launched 17 shots, seven of those on-goal.
Kyes earned his fourth varsity letter and was a team captain this fall. He is a three time academic all-conference selection and will earn a fourth honor this fall. He was voted the Vikings' "Newcomer of the Year" in 2011 as a freshman.
A tremendous student, he has a 3.96 grade point average with majors in accounting and business administration. He is a member of the Austin E. Knowlton Honors Program at Augustana and was a member of the Aristeia Honor Society for freshmen.
During the summer between his freshman and sophomore year he served as a program director for Youthworks in Savannah, Georgia where he helped plan and facilitate activities for over 70 people. He served as a trail guide for Adventurous Christians in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in the summer of 2013. During this past summer he was the lead conference host at Augustana where he assisted the director of summer conferences by managing a team of seven conference hosts.
Kyes served as a marketing intern for Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Davenport, Iowa and assisted in the planning of the 25th anniversary fundraising effort in 2013. He was offered a position as an audit intern for Deloitte, LLP in Davenport beginning in May of 2015 but he recently accepted a full-ride offer at Wake Forest to complete the Master of Accountancy program
Kyes, the son of Krisi Swafford and Marty Kyes, both of Oswego, is the first Augustana men's soccer player to win Academic All-American honors since Dudley DuPuy in 1986.
The
Capital One Academic All-America team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and Augustana has a long and storied history of success with the program. Currently the Vikings are in a tie for sixth place with Emory University for number of Academic All-Americans produced. Augustana is tied with Emory for second place among NCAA Division III schools with only Massachusetts Institute of Technology having produced more.
