Junior Kelly Farell scored her fourth goal of the season in Augustana's 1-1 tie with Aurora at
Thorson-Lucken Field on Tuesday.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. Junior Kelly Farell's (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) fourth goal of the season gave Augustana the lead just before halftime, but Aurora's Nicci Bermudes answered with the equalizer in the 68th minute Tuesday and the Vikings and Spartans went on to finish in a 1-1 tie at Thorson-Lucken Field. Augustana is now 7-3-1 on the season, while Aurora goes to 9-3-1.

In the 42nd minute, after Bermudes had three shots in quick succession stopped—one blocked and two saved by Viking goalkeeper Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.)Augustana answered with a counter that Farell finished off with her fourth goal of the year. Senior Taylor Navarro (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was credited with the assist.

The Vikings took that 1-0 lead into halftime and held it until Bermudes found the net in the 68th minute. Chew saved the initial shot from the nation's second leading scorer, but couldn't control it and Bermudes was able to follow up successfully with her 20th goal of the season.

The hosts outshot Aurora 7-3 over the final 22 minutes of regulation, but couldn't come up with the go-ahead goal.

In the first overtime, the Vikings had excellent opportunities by Farell, freshman Mady Huber (Legacy HS, Broomfield, Colo.) and sophomore Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.), but again came up empty. The second overtime yielded fewer good scoring chances, although Augustana still outshot the Spartans 3-1 in the period.

The Augustana back line of seniors Kerri Skotnicki (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, Ill.) and Kimberly Grimmer (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), along with junior Stef Hamaker (Boylan Catholic HS, Caledonia, Ill.), did a solid job on Bermudes, although she still managed to squeeze off 13 shots in the match. Both Chew and Aurora counterpart Rachael Warnock were credited with 10 saves.

The Vikings outshot the visitors by a 22-20 margin, with each side putting 11 shots on goal. Coach Scott Mejia's squad also had a 5-2 advantage in corners.

Next up, Augustana travels to Elmhurst on Saturday, October 11 for a 3:30 p.m. match against the Bluejays.
