Senior co-captain Kimberly Grimmer and Augustana dropped a 2-0 decision to 24th-ranked
Illinois Wesleyan Saturday at Thorson-Lucken Field.ROCK ISLAND, Ill.— A goal early in the second half and one late were enough for 24th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan to hand Augustana a 2-0 defeat in women's soccer action at Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday. Coach
Scott Mejia's Vikings fell to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the CCIW, while the Titans improved to 8-2 on the year and 1-0 in the conference.
A scoreless first half saw just seven shots taken and just one, by Illinois Wesleyan, put on goal. The Titans outshot Augustana 5-2 in the opening period.
Barely two minutes into the second half, IWU's Jenna Baker got a foot on Brie Siebert's cross from just outside the box, left side and slipped it past Viking keeper
Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) for the match's first goal. It was Baker's third of the season and Siebert was credited with the assist.
It looked as though
Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) had leveled the score later in the half, but she was called for a foul and her goal waived off.
Illinois Wesleyan went up two goals in the 81st minute. On Emily Johnson's corner form the left side, the Titans' Sarah Trach got a head on the ball and it bounced off the crossbar. Julie Govedarica gathered the rebound and put it in the net for her third goal of the season. Johnson and Trach each received an assist on the play.
Augustana struggled to mount much of an offensive threat, getting off just three official shots in the match, none of which were on goal. IWU took 11 shots and held an 8-2 advantage in corners.
Mejia's side is back in action on Tuesday, October 7, hosting Aurora at Thorson-Lucken Field at 7:00 p.m.
