Vikings get two straight-set wins on first day of Pumpkin Bash

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana won both of its matches in straight sets on Day One of the Pumpkin Bash at Carver Center Friday. The Vikings handled Dickinson State 25-14, 25-18 and 25-13 in a late afternoon match and came right back to defeat Buena Vista 27-25, 25-14 and 25-13 in an early evening tilt. Coach Kelly Bethke's squad improves to 22-9 on the year heading into tomorrow's matches against Milwaukee School of Engineering (10:00 a.m.) and Simpson (3:30 p.m.).
 
Saturday will also mark Senior Day at Augustana, with the program honoring co-captains Stephanie Petkovsek (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) and Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.), along with Emily Leazer (St. Viator HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.), Julee Morrison (Chaparral HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.), Amber Dalgaard (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) and Hailee Brayton (St. Bede Academy, La Salle, Ill.) in their final matches at home.
 
AUGUSTANA 3, DICKINSON STATE 0 (25-14; 25-18; 25-13)
 
Sophomore Nicole Morrissey's (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) eight kills led the Vikings in their first match of the day, a straight-set victory over Dickinson State from Dickinson, North Dakota. Augustana cruised to 25-14, 25-18 and 25-13 wins to improve to 21-9 on the season. The Blue Hawks fell to 2-26.
 
Junior Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) added six kills and Bethke—spreading the playing time around—also got four each from Brayton, Leazer, sophomore Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) and freshman Claudia Zerdin (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.).
 
Sophomore setter Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) led the Vikings with 18 assists and three service aces, while Petkovsek chipped in with 13 assists.
 
Defensively, junior Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) came up with a team-high 19 digs. Sophomore  Amy Kalkhoff (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Iowa) contributed eight, Leazer seven and Zerdin and Morrison a half dozen each. Morrissey was in on five blocks and Kibir-Evans four, while sophomore Sydney Sand (Burlington Central HS, Elgin, Ill.) led Augustana with three solo blocks.
 
AUGUSTANA 3, BUENA VISTA 0 (27-25; 25-14; 25-13)
 
Keyed by a 27-25 come-from-behind win in set one, the Vikings went on to defeat Buena Vista in three straight as well. Augustana took the second set 25-14 and won 25-13 in the third. The Beavers entered the contest having won 11 of their last 12 matches and are now 20-10 on the year.
 
Murray led the Viking attack with a dozen kills and got ample support from Morrissey and Kibir-Evans, with 10 each, as well as Leazer, who had nine. Lindaman had a match-high 24 assists, with Hampel adding 15.
 
Four Vikings reached double figures in digs, led by Siebert's match-best 27. Leazer added 17, Murray 14 and Hampel 11. Dudley, shaking off a knee injury suffered against Wheaton on Tuesday, was in on a team-high three blocks for Augustana.
