MOORHEAD, Minn. – Augustana used a pair of goals in the opening minutes of each half and parlayed them into a 2-1 non-conference victory over Concordia-Moorhead in the Cobber Classic on Sunday, September 8 in Moorhead, Minnesota. With the victory the Vikings of veteran head coach Scott Mejia move to 3-0-1 on the season.

It was also a little payback for a 2-1 overtime loss suffered by Augustana last year at home to the Cobbers on October 7.

The game was not yet three minutes old (2:25) when sophomore Somer Druszkowski (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Manhattan, Ill.) connected off a nice feed from fellow sophomore Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) and beat Concordia goalkeeper Elizabeth Bitzan to make it 1-0 Vikings.

That was the score at halftime but once again Augustana jumped out in the early going of the stanza as freshman Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) scored at the 47:20 mark with Farell once again getting the assist.

Concordia broke the shutout at 71:00 when Emily Wendorf scored off an assist from Morgan Holm to make it 2-1. In the final 20 minutes of action the Cobbers were able to launch three shots with two of them being on goal and Viking goalkeeper Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) made saves on both. The third shot was wide of the mark.

Chew recorded eight saves in the game while logging all 90 minutes. Concordia-Moorhead held the advantage in shot at 16-12 but Augustana had the edge in corner kicks 7-4.

Augustana's next game will be Saturday, September 14 against Principia in the home opener at Thorson-Lucken Field with game time set for 1:00 p.m.
