Augustana wins Cobber Invite opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Freshman Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) and sophomore Somer Druszkowski (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Manhattan, Ill.) each scored in the match's first eight minutes Saturday and Augustana cruised to a 3-1 win over Simpson at the Cobber Invite. With the win, the Vikings improved to 2-0-1 on the season. Simpson suffered its third loss in as many matches.
 
In the fourth minute, Lohmeier scored her first collegiate goal, heading in Taylor Navarro's (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) corner kick to make it 1-0. Then in the eighth minute, Druszkowski put the Vikings up 2-0 with one-timer off another Navarro corner. The goal was Druszkowski's first of the season.
 
Sophomore Jessica Kras (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) made it 3-0 in the 31st minute, scoring her first goal of the season from point blank range with the help of an assist from senior Amanda Tucker (Crete-Monee HS, Crete, Ill.).
 
Amber Johnson and Maddie Thomas teamed up to get Simpson on the board in the 78th minute. Thomas got the goal off a header pass from Johnson.
 
Augustana dominated the match, piling up a 29-5 advantage in shots, including a 20-4 edge in shots on goal. The Vikings also took all 12 corners in the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) went the distance and was credited with three saves, while her Storm counterpart, Stephanie Cox, recorded a whopping 17 saves against the barrage of Augustana shots.
 
Coach Scott Mejia's club concludes play in the Cobber Invite on Sunday, September 8, taking on host Concordia in a 1:00 p.m. match.
