ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – 16th-ranked Augustana extended its unbeaten streak to nine matches with a 4-0 win over Grinnell Sunday at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead and cruised to the victory, improving to 7-0-2 on the year. The Pioneers fall to 6-4-0.

It looked like the hosts would jump out in front in the third minute, but junior Taylor Navarro's (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) shot at an open goal from point blank range went wide right to keep the match scoreless.

It was just a matter of time, though. In the 27th minute freshman Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) took a feed from sophomore Somer Druszkowski (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Manhattan, Ill.) and scored her team-high sixth goal of the season to put the Vikings on top 1-0.

Ten minutes later, sophomore Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) made it 2-0, blasting one in off a beautiful assist from classmate Jessica Kras (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.). Freshman Kera Linn (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) used some fancy footwork in front of the Grinnell goal a minute later to put Augustana up 3-0 with her first career goal.

The Vikings added the final goal in the 66th minute. A shot by junior Kimberly Grimmer (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) was deflected by a Grinnell defender, but Farell was there to head in the rebound for her second goal of the day and sixth of the season, tying her with Rizzo for the team lead. Two minutes later, she had another goal waived off on a hand ball call.

Augustana dominated play, peppering Pioneer goalkeepers Jordan Young and Katy Oldach with 29 shots in the match, including 15 on goal. In contrast, Viking sophomore Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) only needed to make one save in her 62 minutes in goal. She was relieved by freshman Margaret Williams (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), who stopped three Grinnell shots in her 28 minutes. The Augustana duo combined on the team's fifth straight shutout.

Coach Scott Mejia's club is back in action on Tuesday, October 2 at Milwaukee School of Engineering. The 7:00 match is the first of four consecutive road contests for the Vikings.
