WHITEWATER, Wis. – Senior
Grant Halter (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) tied the match with 16 seconds left in regulation Friday, but Augustana fell just short of earning a tie with 12th-ranked UW-Whitewater. The host Warhawks scored the game-winner with 1:09 remaining in the second overtime to remain perfect on the season at 8-0-0. The Vikings dropped to 3-3-1.
In a spirited match that saw eight yellow cards issued, including five on Whitewater, Michael Salm got the Warhawks on the board in the ninth minute with his first goal of the season. Riley Monahan was credited with the assist. The hosts outshot Augustana 6-3 in the opening period and went to halftime with that 1-0 lead.
It looked as if Salm's goal would hold up until Halter converted an
Erik Gustafson (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) assist in the 90th minute to level the score at 1-1.The goal was Halter's team-leading third of the season, while Gustafson recorded his first assist.
After a scoreless first overtime in which each team got off just a single shot, and nearly nine scoreless minutes of the second extra period, the Warhawks' Ryan Reid finally ended the match. He scored his second goal of the season with an assist from Kody Mjelde.
Whitewater oustshot the Vikings by a 19-8 margin. Just seven of those 27 shots were on goal, however, five by the hosts and two by Augustana. Senior
Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) went the distance in goal for the Vikings, recording three saves, while his counterpart, Josh Rohde stopped one shot for UWW. The Warhawks took eight of the match's 10 corners.

Brenton Joseph's club. The Vikings return to Thorson-Lucken Field on Sunday, September 29, hosting St. Ambrose at 1:30 p.m. following an 11:00 a.m. contest between the Viking women and Grinnell.
