Box Score
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Central jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead Saturday and went on to defeat Augustana 38-13 at Charles D. Lindberg Stadium. The Dutch took advantage of four Viking turnovers to even their record at 1-1 on the year. Augustana now also sports a 1-1 mark.
It looked like the Vikings would take an early lead when they drove from their own 19 to the Central one on the game's third possession. The big play was a 40-yard
Sam Frasco (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) to
Torre Harrell (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) completion and freshman
Brandon Price (Providence Catholic HS, Plainfield, Ill.) and senior
Mike McLean (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.) had runs of 18 and 11 yards, respectively, on the march. However, the Central defense stiffened, throwing Frasco for a pair of three-yard losses. A false start pushed Augustana back another five yards and on fourth down,
Conner Murray's
(Conifer HS, Morrison, Colo.) 29-yard field goal attempt went wide right.
The Dutch answered with a 10-play, 80-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Aaron Eiseler found Keegan Frisch down the right side for a 19-yard touchdown pass.
Jacob Edelman's 29-yard punt return set up the visitors' next score, a 36-yard Kevin Sheldon field goal with 11:12 remaining in the second quarter. Central took advantage of a 20-yard Augustana punt to go up 17-0 on its next possession. Eiseler connected with Blaine Forsythe for an 18-yard touchdown pass to cap a three-play, 36-yard drive.
Eiseler closed out the first-half scoring with an eight-yard touchdown run with 4:04 left before halftime, finishing off a four-play, 52-yard march.
It was Eiseler and Forsythe hooking up again with 8:07 left in the third. Their 40-yard touchdown completion and Sheldon's conversion put the Dutch up 31-0.
Frasco's 53-yard option keeper down the left sideline set up Augustana's first score. He connected with Harrell on fourth-and-goal from the seven on a ball that was tipped by a Central defender. Murray's PAT made it 31-7 with nine seconds left in the third.
Each team added a touchdown in the final period. De'Andre Currie's 37-yard scoring run capped a five-play, 68-yard Central march and Frasco went over from one yard out for the Vikings to finish of a 13-play 81-yard scoring drive. Augustana failed on its two-point conversion attempt and Central ran out the clock to make the final 38-13.
