ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana football team opened its new facility with a win this past Saturday, defeating Mount St. Joseph 20-10 in the inaugural Austin E. Knowlton Kickoff Classic at Lindberg Stadium. With dignitaries including former Augustana and Cincinnati Bengal great Ken Anderson and current Bengals owner and President Mike Brown in attendance, the Vikings defeated their opponents from Cincinnati, Ohio in the first game ever at the Austin E. Knowlton Outdoor Athletic Complex. The complex includes not only Charles D. Lindberg Stadium, but the Ken Anderson Academic All-America Club.

Coach Rob Cushman's squad will be looking to move to 2-0 on the young season on Saturday, September 14, when the Central Dutch come calling to the Knowlton Complex. The Dutch defeated the Vikings 17-10 in Pella, Iowa last year. Central – like Augustana, 5-5 a year ago – comes into the game 0-1 after a tough 24-20 loss to 12th-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh this past Saturday.

The Vikings used a punishing ground attack in the first half and smothering defensive effort in the second to post a 20-10 win over Mount St. Joseph. Senior Eric Chandler (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) rushed for 167 yards in barely more than a half of action and the Viking defense, led by CCIW Defensive Player of the Week Sean Walker (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.), held the Lions without a second-half first down until the final minute of the game.

Senior Mike McLean (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.) filled in nicely after an injury to Chandler, with 60 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Sophomore quarterback Sam Frasco (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) ran for 62 yards and completed 16 of 21 passes for 101 more. Augustana finished with 298 rushing yards and 399 total yards in the game. Senior Nick Krantz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was the Vikings' leading receiver with seven catches for 53 yards.

Walker had a big game for the Vikings defensively, with four total tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two passes broken up. Senior Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) led Augustana with seven tackles. Bo Goshorn (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) and Ben Fornek (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) each had five solo stops and an interception. Coach Rob Cushman's defense limited the Lions to just 60 total yards in the second half and MSJ's two scoring drives covered a total of only seven yards.

Central Head Coach Jeff McMartin will look to junior quarterback Aaron Eiseler to run the Dutch offense. Eiseler completed 114 of 188 passes for 1,311 yards and seven touchdowns last year and was picked off eight times. Blaine Forsythe, who had 24 catches for 328 yards and a team-best three touchdowns, should be one of his top targets. Juniors Josh Osborn (548 yards on 116 carries) and De'Andre Currie (339 yards on 66 carries) are the top returning rushers for the Dutch. Central returns three starters on the offensive line, led by 2012 second team All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pick Travis Hook. The 6' 4", 270-pound senior has moved to center after playing tackle a year ago.

Defensively, McMartin will have first team All-IIAC end Danny Sampson back. In addition, 2011 first team all-conference linebacker Keith Rush returns after missing all of 2012 and the Dutch also get back corner Jason Breon, who missed all but the first two games a year ago.

Junior kicker Kevin Sheldon is a two-time first team All-IIAC selection.

HEAD COACH ROB CUSHMAN
Rob Cushman is in his third season as the head coach of the Augustana football program. He has spent the 2008-10 seasons serving as the Viking defensive coordinator. His coaching career began at Cal State-Chico in 1979. His first head coaching position was at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon, where he spent five seasons before being named the first head coach at Feather River College in Quincy, California in 2002. He led the fledgling program to a 34-21 (.618) record in five seasons, reaching a post-season bowl game each year. He served as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York in 2007, prior to coming to Augustana.
