WHEATON, Ill. – Anna Seabolt took a cross from Leah DeMoss with less than a minute remaining Wednesday and scored the match's only goal to give top-ranked Wheaton a 1-0 CCIW tournament semifinal win over Augustana at Joe Bean Stadium. The Vikings fall to 12-4-4 on the year, while the Thunder improve to 16-1-2 and advance to Saturday's tournament championship contest.
With the match looking like it was headed for overtime, DeMoss made a run up the left side and put a cross in front of the Augustana goal. Seabolt took the pass and beat sophomore goalkeeper
Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) with the game winner.
Wheaton outshot the Vikings by an 8-4 margin. The Thunder put four of their attempts on goal to three for Augustana. Chew and Wheaton counterpart Kelsey Graham each made three saves.
The Vikings' best opportunity in the first half came in the 27th minute on a
Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) shot from about eight yards on the right side. However, Graham was right there to make the save. In the 39th minute,
Brianne Frys (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) unleashed a blast from 25 yards straight on, but again it was right at Graham, who corralled it. Late in the half, Farell got a Wheaton defender on her hip and made a run in the box, but was unable to get a shot off.
The hosts nearly got on the board in the 40th minute, when DeMoss' header from the left side hit the crossbar and the far post before Chew grabbed it to keep the match scoreless.
In the 64th minute Farell fed freshman
Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.), but Rizzo's shot from 10 yards was just high.
Wheaton had a flurry in front of the Augustana goal in the 74th minute, but there was plenty of defensive traffic and the Vikings were able to deflect a pair of Ally Witt shots. Chew made a great diving save on a shot by Wheaton's Seabolt in the 86th minute.
