Second half goals lift women's soccer past Millikin 3-0

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – It took nearly 60 minutes for Augustana to gets its offense on-track but the Vikings responded with three second-half goals to defeat Millikin 3-0 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women's soccer action. The wind-blown match on Saturday, November 2 at Thorson-Lucken Field gave veteran head coach Scott Mejia's team a spot in the CCIW Tournament, which will start on Wednesday, November 6.
 
Augustana had a 12-4 advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes of play but was unable to find the back of the net as Millikin goalkeeper Kyli Humm recorded four saves during the initial stanza. In the second half the Vikings finally broke loose when sophomore Jessica Kras (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) scored off an assist from junior Taylor Navarro (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) at 59:19.
 
Once Kras scored, Navarro answered that goal with one of her own, this time unassisted, less than a minute later (60:10) to make it 2-0. Kras' goal was her third on the season while Navarro scored for the seventh time. The final goal for Augustana came off the foot of senior Merrill Clayton (Legacy HS, Westminster, Colo.) at 80:56 with freshman Kera Linn (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) picking up the assist.
 
The Vikings completely dominated the statistics with a whopping 26-6 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) and freshman Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) each had five shots to lead the team with four of Farell's being on goal. Navarro launched four shots and senior Stephanie Barr (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) had three.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) had two saves in over 85 minutes of action and freshman Margaret Williams (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had one in 4:50 of play. This was the 12th shutout of the season for Augustana.
 
With the win the Vikings move to 12-3-4 overall and 4-2-1 in the CCIW while Millikin falls to 6-10-1 and 1-6-0.
