ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – After being held scoreless while playing with a stiff wind at its back in the first half, Augustana tallied twice into the heavy breeze in the second half to record a 2-0 win over Elmhurst on Saturday, October 26 at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings of veteran head coach
Scott Mejia are now11-3-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin while Elmhurst falls to 8-7-0 and 2-4-0.
In the first half Augustana was unable to take advantage of the wind despite having an 8-3 advantage in shots and forcing Bluejay goalie Emily Gordon to make two of her five saves. The Vikings also had four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
Things changed early in the second half when freshman
Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) took advantage of an Elmhurst miscue in front of the net and drilled the ball past Gordon for her sixth goal of the season. Lohmeier's goal came less than three minutes (47:51) into the second stanza.
Sophomore
Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) made it 2-0 at 61:58 when she scored on a breakaway after a nice feed from sophomore
Somer Druszkowski (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Manhattan, Ill.). It was Farell's ninth goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded nine saves as she recorded the Vikings' 11th shutout of the season.
Augustana, which has won at least 11 matches in each of the last 12 seasons, will go on the road to face Wisconsin-Whitewater on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. before coming home to finish the regular season on Saturday, November 2 against Millikin at 1:00 p.m. at Thorson-Lucken Field.
