ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Despite outshooting the Elmhurst by an 18-6 margin Saturday, Augustana fell 1-0 to the Bluejays at Thorson-Lucken Field. Brett Stiffler's goal in the 66th minute was the only score in the match and lifted the visitors to 10-3-3 on the year and 3-1-2 in the CCIW. The Vikings fall to 5-10-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the conference.

Augustana outshot Elmhurst 10-2 in the first half, including 4-1 in shots on goal, but Bluejay keeper John Reglin stopped all four to keep the Vikings off the board. Augustana's Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) stopped the only shot he faced in the opening period.

The hosts continued with the pressure in the second half, but in the 66th minute, Stiffler collected a loose ball just outside the box and lofted his shot over the head of a charging Cowherd and into the net. The goal was Stiffler's third of the season and gave the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings got off four shots the rest of the way, but couldn't beat Reglin. Grant Halter's (Glenbard West HS, Glwn Ellyn, Ill.) last-gasp bicycle kick with nine seconds left was wide right.

Halter and senior Fridolin Wernick (Evangelic Gymnasium Hermannswerder, Postdam, Germany) each got off four shots for Augustana in the match, with Wernick putting two of his on goal. The Vikings finished with an 18-6 edge in overall shots and a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Corners were even at three and Elmhurst committed 16 fouls, to eight for the hosts.

Next up for Coach Brenton Joseph's squad is a non-conference match against Benedictine at Thorson-Lucken Field on Tuesday, October 29. Starting time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
