Scoring drought ends in 5-0 win at North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – A scoring drought that had veteran Augustana head women's soccer coach Scott Mejia shaking his head finally ended Saturday, October 19 in Naperville, Illinois when his Vikings pounded North Central 5-0 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action. With the victory Augustana moves to 10-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in league play.
 
The Vikings had garnered just two goals in the last four games and one of those came on a penalty kick in a 1-0 victory at North Park on Saturday, October 5.
 
In the win at North Central on Saturday afternoon it was freshman Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) who broke the ice. She scored a pair of goals in the first half to give the Vikings a 2-0 advantage at intermission. Her first goal came at 17:24 and it was a header off a cross from senior Stephanie Barr (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.). The second goal came near the end of the first half (39:05) and she was assisted on the play by senior Ally Frickman (Loveland HS, Loveland, Colo.). For Rizzo, the goals were her seventh and eighth of the year.
 
In the second half sophomore Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) got into the act and scored unassisted on a breakaway. It was her eighth goal of the year, pulling her into the team lead in that category with Rizzo. The goal came at 63:09 and made it 3-0 in favor of the Vikings.
 
Freshman Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) tallied her fifth goal of the season at 70:56 with an assist going to junior Kerri Skotnicki (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, Ill.) after Skotnicki launched a free kick from 30 yards out. The final goal for the Vikings came at 80:53 when junior Taylor Navarro (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) scored unassisted for her fifth goal of the campaign.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) worked into the 78th minute and recorded six saves and was given credit for the victory. She is now 9-2-3 on the year. Freshman Margaret Williams (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) played the final 12:32 in goal and helped preserve the shutout.
 
The Vikings held the advantage in shots 18-8 over the Cardinals, including a 10-4 margin in the second half. Augustana also led in corner kicks 6-3.
 
Augustana has now recorded 10 shutouts on the season and sports a goals-against-average of 0.44. The Vikings have allowed just seven goals all year. The Vikings will host Wheaton, the number one ranked team in NCAA Division III at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
