Box Score
ROCK ISLAND, Ill.— It took nearly 78 minutes, but
Taylor Navarro (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finally got Augustana on the board against Wartburg Wednesday night. Navarro's fourth goal of the season held up over the final 12 minutes at Thorson-Lucken Field and the Vikings improved to 9-2-3 on the year with the 1-0 win. The Knights fall to 5-7-1.
Augustana outshot Wartburg by a 10-5 margin in the first half, but the Knights closed the gap after halftime, with a 7-4 edge in shots. Of the 26 shots between the teams, just three were on goal. One of those was Navarro's unassisted game-winner from the right side in the 78th minute.
Ten minutes later, the Vikings survived Wartburg's best scoring opportunity of the evening. First, Brinkley Werkman launched a shot just beyond the reach of goalkeeper
Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.). It hit the crossbar and bounded down to teammate Brittany Frush, but Frush's header from point blank range sailed high, preserving the Augustana lead.
Led by the back line of seniors
Maggie Hoscheit (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and
Ally Frickman (Loveland HS, Loveland, Colo.), junior
Kerri Skotnicki (Waubonsie Valley, Aurora, Ill.), and sophomore
Stef Hamaker (Boylan Catholic HS, Caledonia, Ill.) as well as Chew, the Vikings posted their ninth shutout of the season and their eighth in the last 10 matches.
Chew made one save and recorded her fifth solo shutout to improve to 8-2-3 this season. Her Knight counterpart, Katie Reinhardt, also had one save.
Augustana steps back into CCIW play on Saturday, October 19, taking on North Central in Naperville, Illinois. The 1:00 p.m. match will be the fourth consecutive road date to start the conference season for Coach
Scott Mejia's team.
