Box Score
KENOSHA, Wis.—Rachel Post scored the match's only goal in the 87th minute Wednesday, giving Carthage a 1-0 win over Augustana at Art Keller Field. The Vikings, who suffered their first loss in league play since their 2011 CCIW finale, fall to 8-2-2 and 1-1-0 in the conference. The Lady Reds improve to 8-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the league.
It was a tale of two halves, as Augustana outshot Carthage by a 9-3 margin in the opening 45 minutes. The hosts turned the tables after halftime however, with an 11-4 advantage in shot attempts. The Lady Reds finished with a 14-13 edge in total shots for the match, including 7-6 in shots on goal.
Corners were also fairly even with the Vikings taking five to Carthage's seven. The most important, however, came with just 3:09 remaining by Lady Red Kayla McGuinness. Post tapped in McGuinness' corner for her seventh goal of the year and that score held up over the final 3:05 to give the hosts the victory.
Both goalkeepers, Augustana sophomore
Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) and Carthage's Abby Alm, recorded six saves in the match. Chew dropped to 7-2-2 on the season.
Sophomore
Kelly Farell (St. Ursula HS, Sylvania, Ohio) led the Vikings with three shot attempts, including one on goal. Freshmen
Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and
Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) each put both of their attempts on goal.
Coach
Scott Mejia's squad will try and bounce back at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, October 12. The Vikings will play their third of four straight road matches to start the CCIW season, facing the Titans at 5:00 p.m. in Bloomington, Illinois.
