Grey Giovanine

In 21 seasons at the helm of Augustana men’s basketball, Head Coach Grey Giovanine has firmly established his program as one of the best in all of NCAA Division III. The school’s all-time winningest coach, he has earned national Coach of the Year honors from Basketball Times in 2015 and 2019 and D3hoops.com in 2017 and led Augustana to national championship game appearances in 2015 and 2017. He has compiled a record of 433-150 (.743) in his first 21 seasons with the Vikings.

For five seasons, from 2014-19, the Vikings went 131-26 and advanced at least as far as the sweet sixteen each year. Augustana also became the first program ever to be ranked in D3hoops.com’s final top five for five consecutive years. Giovanine’s 2018-19 squad went 26-4 and captured an unprecedented fifth straight CCIW championship. His 2017-18 outfit finished 25-6 and reached the Division III quarterfinals. In 2016-17, Augustana finished 24-9 and fell by one point in the national title game. His 2015-16 team posted a 29-2 record—equaling the most wins in school and conference history—and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division III Tournament. His 2014-15 squad’s 27-5 season included a trip to the national championship game. The Vikings’ 17 NCAA Tournament wins over those five seasons are the most by any program at any level of NCAA competition.

In CCIW play, Giovanine’s teams have gone 214-88 (.709). His ten regular season titles are the second-most in conference history and he’s currently third all-time in wins and fourth in winning percentage (minimum of two seasons). His six conference tournament championships are the most in league history.

Giovanine was named the CCIW’s “Coach of the Year” from 2006-08, in 2011 and from 2015-19. He earned Illinois Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division III “Coach of the Year” honors in 2002, 2003, from 2006-08, in 2011 and from 2015-18.

In addition to his three national Coach of the Year awards, he was also D3hoops.com’s Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2011 and its Central Region Coach of the Year in 2017. Since 2008, Giovanine’s teams have been ranked in the final D3hoops.com Top 10 seven times, including second in 2015, third in 2016 and 2017, fifth in 2018 and fourth in 2019.

Giovanine (gee-oh-VAHN-ee) was named the 14th head men’s basketball coach at Augustana College in April of 1999. He came to Augustana after leading NCAA Division I Lamar to three straight winning seasons for the first time in over a decade, including a 17-11 overall record in the 1998-99 campaign. It was the Cardinals’ best record since a 20-11 season in 1987-88.

Prior to coming to Lamar, Giovanine was an assistant coach at Wichita State University for a year from April of 1992 until June of 1993. He was the recruiting coordinator and his first recruiting class was rated as the best class in the Missouri Valley Conference and was ranked in the top 25 nationally. For the five years before that (1987-92), he was the assistant coach at Rice where the Owls put together the school’s first 20 win season in 40 years. At both Wichita State and Rice he worked under head coach Scott Thompson, who has Quad-City ties.

Giovanine has a degree in psychology from Central Missouri State where he graduated in 1982. Prior to that, he received an associate degree from Highland Community College in Freeport, Illinois. He enjoyed tremendous careers at both institutions. He is the all-time leading scorer at Highland with 1,024 points in his two year career. At Central Missouri, he captained the 1979-80 team that finished 26-2 and was ranked number one in NCAA Division II for five straight weeks. He was also the leading free throw shooter in the nation with a percentage of .904. Grey and his wife Kelly live in Moline, Illinois. They are parents to sons Grey, Reid and Luke.
