Augustana College Athletics

Tom Lawrence was named Augustana’s head coach in May of 2013. A former Viking team captain in the sport of men’s cross country, Lawrence has made golf one of his passions after playing basketball and running track & cross country during his younger, competitive years.
 
Lawrence completed his eighth season at Augustana in 2020-21, leading the Vikings to a win at the Viking Invitational and a head-to-head record of 45-11 (.804). This year’s team recorded the program’s fourth straight third-place finish at the CCIW Championship and finished no lower than third in any of their seven events. Augustana climbed as high as 22nd in Golfstat’s national rankings before finishing 44th—the highest final ranking in program history.
 
Lawrence’s 2019-20 outfit set school records for season scoring average (324.9), as well as lowest 18 (302), 36 (608) and 54-hole (992) rounds.
 
Lawrence, who has degrees in business administration and speech communications from Augustana, spent three years (2010-13) as the co-head coach of girls’ golf at Moline High School. His coaching partner was his wife Donna, who is also an Augustana graduate.
 
“One thing I want to stress to the players on our team is to take things one-shot-at-a-time, both literally and figuratively,” he said. “I believe that college athletics in general and golf in particular, is a great part of learning life skills. We are going to celebrate small victories with the thought that eventually those will be the building blocks to larger victories.”
 
Lawrence was the third of three brothers (Terry and Ted) to graduate from Augustana. He and Donna are parents to David, who played golf at Eastern Illinois University, and Jamie (2010-14) and Jenna (2014-18), both of whom were four-year letter winners playing for their father.
