2003-04 Women's Swimming & Diving Review

Maura Milas leads women’s swimming & diving team

She showed junior standing but Maura Milas (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, IL) knew that the 2003-04 swimming and diving season would be her last chance to compete competitively. She will graduate from Augustana a year early and will head on to medical school next year. She left nothing to chance in her last season as she finished the year as the top point scorer for the Vikings of head coach Gary Ackerson.

Milas leaves Augustana with her name liberally sprinkled among the school’s top ten times list. She is second on the 50 freestyle (:24.67), third in the 100 freestyle (:54.16) seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:01.25) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.72). All but the 100 butterfly were times from her sophomore year of 2002-03 while the 100 butterfly came this past season. She was named to the academic all-conference team in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and is a finalist for a prestigious NCAA PostGraduate Scholarship.

The Vikings finished the season 1-6 in dual meets and sixth in the CCIW championship meet with 164 points. They won the Augustana Invitational and placed fifth in the Grinnell Invitational. In the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational, Augustana was fourth.

Milas was the top individual performer at the CCIW meet, taking fifth in the 50 freestyle, sixth in the 50 freestyle and 10th in the 100 butterfly.

Milas was not the only individual who has her name on the top ten all-time list. Michelle Chao (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, IL) has the seventh best 50 freestyle (:25.14), sixth best 100 freestyle (:54.88) and 10th fastest 200 freestyle (2:03.12) time. Kristin Beil (Buffalo Grove HS,Arlington Heights, IL) is seventh on the 100 backstroke list (1:04.47) and fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:20.36).

This past season Milas recorded the fastest times on the team in the 50 freestyle (:25.07), 100 freestyle (:54.62), 100 butterfly (1:02.72) and 200 individual medley (2:25.54). Chao had the top time in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.12 with Sarah Nelson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, IL)leading the way in the 500 freestyle in 5:57.35. The distance events belonged to Sarah Racine (Palatine HS, Palatine, IL) who topped the squad in the 1000 (12:34.66) and the 1650 (21:05.50). She also had the best 400 individual medley at 5:37.66. Beil was the top backstroker, turning in times of 1:04.64 in the 100 and 2:20.40 in the 200. Emyli Floyd (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, IL) led the team in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.89 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:49.02.  Jenny Petrie (Dixon HS, Dixon, IL) had the best score in all four diving events: one meter dual (180.65), one meter championship (148.65), three meter dual (159.80) and three meter invitational (129.90).
