Jake Groselak repeats as men’s golf MVP; Vikings seventh at CCIW Championship

(Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.), Coach Paul Del Vecchio’s Augustana men’s golf team finished seventh at this year’s CCIW Championship. Groselak, who led Viking letter winners with an average round of 80.4 strokes this year, repeated as the team’s MVP. Freshman David Ferlmann

(Zion Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) was selected Most Improved.
Augustana competed in 12 events this season with a 63-88 head-to-head record. The Vikings’ top finish was second place among 13 teams at the Loras College Fall Invitational on September 4, 2012. They also finished fourth in fields of 16 teams at both the Duane Chanay Invitational on September 7 and the Elmhurst Fall Invitational on September 27.
Groselak played all 12 events and 22 rounds for Augustana this season. He had his best round at the Elmhurst Invitational on September 27. He shot a one-over par 73, finishing in a tie for fifth among 82 competitors. His highest finish was a tie for fourth (77) at the Scot-Fire-Viking Classic on September 13.
Ferlmann competed in 11 events and 20 rounds this year and his 83.0 per-round average was second among Viking letter winners. His best round and top finish came at the Scot-Fire Invite on April 26-27. He shot a second-round 74 to finish with a two-round total of 152, good for a tie for eighth in a field of 72 competitors. Ferlmann finished 38th at the CCIW tournament with a score of 337 (79-87-86-85) over four rounds.
Junior Dave Cook
(United Township HS/ Silvis, Ill.) was limited to six events and nine rounds, but averaged 83.2 strokes, including a best round of 77 at the Duane Chanay Invitational. His highest finish was a tie for 16th (80) at the Scot-Fire-Viking Classic.
Sophomore Grant Murphy
(Dunlap HS, Peoria, Ill.) joined Groselak as the only Viking to play all 12 events and 22 rounds this year. He averaged 84.1 strokes per round. His best round and highest finish was a 73 at the Loras Fall Invitational, which tied him for fourth. He shot a 338 (84-85-84-85) at the CCIW Championship, finishing 39th.
Sophomore Max Channon
(Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) averaged 84.7 strokes over 18 rounds in 10 events. His best round was a 76 at the Duane Chanay Invitational and his highest finish came at the Scot-Fire-Viking Classic, where he shot a 19th-place 81. He was second among Vikings at the CCIW Championship, shooting a four-round total of 336 (80-90-82-84) to finish tied for 36th overall.
Kukla played 16 rounds in nine events, averaging 85.7 strokes. His best round of 74 came at the Duane Chanay Invitational and his best finish was a tie for 26th at the Scot-Fire-Viking Classic. He shot a 333 (80-81-83-89) at the CCIW Championship, but didn’t place as a result of playing the first two rounds as an individual.
Freshman Alex Walter
(Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) competed in only the seven fall events. He averaged 78.8 strokes over 11 rounds. He had Augustana’s best round and finish of the season with a 71 at the Duane Chanay Invitational, tying for third place.
