2008-09 Men's Golf Review

Kyle Weigand named “Most Outstanding Player,” Phil Litchfield honored as “Most Improved,” and Jordan Henry earns “Newcomer of the Year” award; Vikings place seventh at CCIW Tournament

The Augustana men’s golf team finished the 2008-09 campaign with an overall record of 33-35 after competing in seven events throughout the season.  The team’s best showings were a fifth place performance at the 16 team Augustana Invitational this spring and a sixth place finish at the 17 team Benedictine Invitational this past fall.
 
The men’s golf team finished its season with a seventh place finish at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship meet.  The Blue & Gold shot 1,280 for the four rounds of play, finishing ahead of North Park (1,328).  Sophomore Kyle Weigand (Leyden HS, Franklin Park, Ill.) led the squad with a 17th place individual showing.  He finished with a total score of 309 (72 + 79 + 78 +80). 
 
Freshman Jordan Henry (Erie HS, Erie, Ill.) compiled the top average on the team, firing a 77.8 per round.  He participated in nine rounds of action in five events and had two top-10 performances.  Henry was the runner-up at the Augustana Triangular and also took eighth out of 24 golfers at the Red Poling Collegiate Classic.  His low round of 73 came at the Augie Triangular.  Henry was also 22nd out of 86 golfers at the Augustana Invitational this spring.
 
Weigand had the second lowest scoring average on the team, shooting 79.3 per round.  He competed in 11 rounds at six events and had a pair of top-five finishes.  He tied for third in the 33 player field at the season opening Augie Triangular and later placed fourth out of 86 players at the Augustana Invitational.  He shot a low round of 72 at the first day of the Augustana Invitational and also in round one of the CCIW championship meet.
 
Sophomore Phil Litchfield (Benet Academy, Darien, Ill.) was third on the team with an 80.0 scoring average.  He played in four events and had nine rounds on the course, compiling a top-10 showing at the Augustana Invitational.  Litchfield was 10th out of 86 golfers and fired his lowest score of the season, shooting a 71 in the second round of action.
 
Sophomore Cole Wells (Tri-Valley HS, Downs, Ill.) came in just behind Litchfield with an 80.1 scoring average.  He entered six events and put together a pair of top-10 performances in 11 rounds of action.  Wells shot a season low round of 72 on the first day of the Benedictine Invitational, where he placed 11th in the 89 player field.  He finished sixth out of 23 golfers at the Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular and 10th out of 24 participants at the Red Poling Collegiate Classic.
 
Senior Kevin Conte (Montini HS, Clarendon Hills, Ill.) capped his career with an 81.4 scoring average while competing in four events in his final season.  In seven rounds on the course, he totaled 570 shots and had two top-20 finishes.  Conte was 16th in the season opening Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular and also finished an impressive 20th out of 75 players at the Scot-Fire Invitational this spring.  His best round of the year was a 74 and came in his final round of the season.
Junior Zach Kinscherf (Quincy Notre Dame HS, Quincy, Ill.) participated in six events and finished with an average of 82.1 strokes per round in nine rounds on the course.  He made a total of 739 shots.  Kinscherf was a top 20 finisher at the Red Poling Collegiate Classic (15th) and the Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular (16th).  His low round of 76 came in the second round at both the Benedictine Invitational in the fall and the Augustana Invitational in the spring.
 
Sophomore Ted Keopple (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) was the lone Viking to play in all 13 rounds of competition.  He had 1,069 shots and a scoring average of 82.2.  Keopple had his best score of the season during the second round of the Augustana Invitational, firing a 77.  His top showing was a ninth place finish at the Vike-Fire-Scot Triangular.  Keopple also placed 21st out of 75 golfers at the Prairie Fire Classic.
