2013 Volleyball Review

Vikings finish 2013 16-15 overall and 3-4 in CCIW play; Kylie Siebert earns third team All-CCIW honors; Kelly Bethke named head coach for the 2014 season

Augustana’s volleyball program wrapped up the 2013 season with a 16-15 overall record, posting its second consecutive winning season. The Vikings finished fifth in the CCIW with a 3-4 mark and will head into the 2014 season under the direction of Head Coach Kelly Bethke, who was selected to lead the program in November.

Led by an MVP performance from junior Dory Dudley (Tremont HS, Tremont, Ill.), Augustana opened the season by winning three of four matches and taking second place at the six-team Viking Classic. The Vikings dropped two of their next three – with both losses coming in tough five-set fashion – but rebounded to go 2-0 at the Oberlin Tournament in Oberlin, Ohio in mid-September.

The team stayed hot, winning four of its next five to run its record to 10-4. Included in that stretch was a win in the CCIW opener at Illinois Wesleyan. A trip to Winona, Minnesota followed, for the St. Mary’s Invitational. Augustana went 1-3 against solid competition and then returned home, where they fell to an Elmhurst team that would go on to win an undefeated CCIW title and reach the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Following the resignation of Coach Jamie Eickman on October 9, the Vikings won two of three on a swing south to St. Louis, Missouri and Springfield, Illinois. Under the direction of interim Head Coach Steve Hennings, the squad moved to 2-1 in the conference with a four-set win at North Central. A loss to Millikin a week later evened the team’s conference mark at 2-2.

Augustana hosted the third annual Pumpkin Back on October 25 & 26. The Vikings went 2-2 in the tournament, including a CCIW win over North Park. However, losses to Carthage and Wheaton to close the CCIW regular season kept them out of the conference tournament. A loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater closed out the 2013 season.

Individually, sophomore libero Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) had a fine season, earning All-CCIW third team recognition. She led the conference in digs at 5.95 per set and ranked 43rd nationally with an average of 5.30 in all games. The latter figure represents the fourth-best single season mark in school history. She’ll enter her junior season needing just 68 digs to crack Augustana’s all-time top ten. Siebert also ranked third on the team in assists (109) and fourth in service aces (28).

Sophomore Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) led the Vikings in kills this season with 256. Dudley was right behind at 221. Murray’s 261 digs were second on the team behind Siebert and she was third in service aces with 34. The setting combo of sophomore Jordan Hampel (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) and freshman Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Ill.) was solid all season. Hampel was the team leader in assists (543) and aces (48), while Lindaman was second in each category with 447 and 39, respectively. Hampel already ranks eighth all-time at Augustana with 1,402 career assists.  Junior Hailee Brayton (St. Bede Academy, Peru, Ill.) had the Vikings’ best hitting percentage at .219 and also led with 19 solo and 58 total blocks. Her 145 kills were third best on the team.

On November 25, Augustana announced the hiring of Bethke as the 11th head coach in program history. She joins the Vikings after seven seasons as an assistant coach at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. Prior to that, she was the head coach at Monona Grove High School in Monona, Wisconsin.
