ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Back at home for the first time in four games, Augustana College women's volleyball (4-7, 0-0) played host to Coe College (3-9, 0-0) on Tuesday night. Coe jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match, but Augustana won the last three sets to pull off the comeback and win 3-2.

• Sophia Sommesi tied for the game's lead in kills with 18 while Grace Lichthardt was right behind her with 17.
• Abby Kirchner dished out 22 assists. 
• Lanah Queckboerner held the line defensively with 23 digs.

 

How it Happened

 

First Set

After splitting the first four points of the set, a kill and service ace gave the Kohawks the first multi-point lead of the night, 4-2. Neither team could come up with a big run until Coe led 8-5. From there, Augie rattled off five straight points to jump ahead of their opponents, 10-8, and force Coe to use their first timeout. 

 

Out of the break, Coe scored the first two points to tie the set at 10-10 and added an additional point to retake the lead, 11-10. After a service error from each squad, the Vikings used a 5-0 run to build a 16-12 advantage. The Kohawks hit back with four straight points of their own however to knot the game up at 16-16 and cause Augie to call a timeout. 

 

Following the timeout, Coe kept the run going with an additional point to hop back in front, 17-16, before a service error tied the set again. With the score 17-17, neither team could find a two-point lead again until Augustana used back-to-back kills to take a 22-20 lead and Coe had to call another timeout. 

 

A 3-1 Coe run out of their timeout led to a 23-23 tie and a timeout by Augie. The Vikings were unable to slow the Kohawks momentum down, giving up two straight kills to lose set one 25-23 and fall in a 1-0 hole in the match. 

 

Second Set

The teams traded points to begin set two until it was 3-3. Consecutive points from the visitors put Coe in front 4-3, but three straight from the Vikings gave them the set's first multi-point lead, 6-4. The Vikings soon built a three-point lead 8-5 and staved off a Coe comeback attempt to then enlarge their lead to six, 13-7, and force a Kohawk timeout. 

 

After the timeout, Coe grabbed back a pair of points to cut the lead to four before a service error gave control back to Augustana. The Vikings took advantage of the error to add another two points to the lead, which now stood at 16-9. A 6-1 run from Coe swiftly cut that lead down to two however, 17-15, and led to an Augustana timeout. 

 

That run continued past the time out, with Coe scoring another point to pull within one, 17-16. A service error kept Augie's lead intact, and Alita Folkening added to it with an ace. Coe did not quit however, scoring on back-to-back kills to bring their deficit down to one again. An attack error by the Kohawks briefly set Augie's advantage at two, 20-18, but a kill and service ace completed Coe's long climb back to tie things at 20-all and make it a race to five points.

 

The Vikings struck first in the race with consecutive points, but Coe hit back to two of their own to force another tie and another Augustana timeout. Each team grabbed a point after the timeout, and Coe soon jumped in front 24-23. At set point now, Augie committed a bad set to drop set two, 25-23, handing Coe a 2-0 lead in the match. 

 

Third Set

Set three began by the teams splitting the first 10 points. With the set tied 5-5, three straight Viking points put them on top 8-5. The ball kept falling Augie's way as a 4-2 run enlarged their lead to five, 12-7, leading to a Coe timeout. 

 

While the Kohawks struck first after the timeout, the following three points belonged to the Vikings, bumping their lead up to seven, 15-8. A service error ended that run, and Coe took advantage of the misstep to work their way back within two, 15-13, and force a Viking timeout. 

 

Augie's lead hovered at three until back-to-back kills put them up by five, 21-16, and led to Coe's second timeout of the set. Another three points went the Vikings' way after the timeout to bring them to set-point, and a Sommesi kill sealed the deal for Augie, 25-16, and sent the match to set four. 

 

Fourth Set

Needing another set win to stay alive, Augie fell in a quick 4-1 hole in the set before scoring six straight to jump ahead, 7-4. Their lead stuck around three until a 3-0 Kohawks spree tied the set at 10. The teams found additional ties at 11-11, 12-12, 13-13, and 14-14. From there, consecutive Augustana points gave them the first multiple-point lead in a while at 16-14. 

 

A 3-1 Augie run grew their lead to four, 19-15, leading to a Coe timeout. The Kohawks grabbed a pair of points out of the break before the Vikings hit point number 20. Another set of Coe points closed the gap to one, 20-19. The teams then swapped points until back-to-back Kohawk kills evened the set at 22-22. Augie used a timeout as a result. 

 

The Coe run carried on past the time out as they struck first to take a 23-22 lead. Augie quickly tied it and then reached set point thanks to a Coe attack error, causing a Kohawk timeout. That timeout did little for the visitors, as Folkening ended the set, 25-23, with a kill, forcing a winner-take-all set five. 

 

Set Five

Neither team found much breathing room to start the final set. Augie briefly held a multi-point lead, 4-2, but Coe rallied back to jump ahead 5-4. The Vikings did tie it at 5-5 as the teams commenced trading points until they were tied 7-7. This kickstarted a 4-0 Vikings run, causing Coe to use both of their timeouts as they now trailed 11-7 in the first-to-15 race. 

 

Augie scored another point out of the pause to up their lead to five before Coe finally stopped the bleeding. However, Augustana resumed their spree with another two points and a Sommesi kill completed the reserve sweep as Augustana won set five 15-8 and the match 3-2.
