PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Augustana College women's volleyball (3-7, 0-0) concluded their trip to the UW-Platteville Tournament on Saturday with a doubleheader against MSOE (6-4, 0-0) and UW-Platteville (8-3, 0-0). Both matches turned into five-set thrillers, but Augie was not on the winning side of either, falling 3-2 against both teams. 

 

GAME ONE - MSOE 3-2 AUGIE

• Sophia Sommesi fell just short of the 20-kill mark with her game-high 19.
• Abby Kirchner dished out 22 assists.

How it Happened

 

First Set

After Augie took an early 2-0 lead, MSOE captured six of the next seven points to jump in front 6-3. But five straight from the Vikings gave them a multiple-point lead at 8-6. The Raiders broke that streak with a kill before another big run from Augustana, this one 4-1, put them in front by four, 11-7.

 

The Raiders then used a 4-1 run of their own to pull within one, 12-11, before consecutive Viking points gave them some breathing room at 14-11. Over the next seven volleys, MSOE ended up with four points to trail by two, 17-15. But this lead to three straight Raider kills as they finally retook the lead at 18-17.

 

That lead was short lived however, as back-to-back Augie kills gave them a 19-18 advantage. Trailing again, MSOE rattled off another 4-1 run to lead by two, 22-20. Augustana managed to tie it for a second, 22-22, before a MSOE kill put them back in charge and two points away from claiming set one. However, the last three points of set one belonged to the Vikings, who claimed a 25-23 set victory and 1-0 match lead. 

 

Second Set

The squads traded points for the first six volleys of set two. With it now tied 3-3, MSOE piled on seven consecutive scores to take charge, 10-3. After splitting the next 12 points, Augie finally made some ground up with back-to-back points to cut the deficit to five, 16-11. 

 

An Augustana error kicked the lead back up to six, but four Viking points in a row closed the gap to two, 17-15. But just as Augie returned to striking range, a 4-1 MSOE run set their lead at five, 21-16. The squads swapped points until MSOE hit set point, 24-19. Two straight kills from Grace Lichthardt prolonged the second set momentarily, but one final Raider kill won the set in their favor, 25-21. 

 

Third Set

Even 1-1 in the match, MSOE and Augie started set three by working to a 2-2 tie. Augustana claimed the first big swing of the set though, using a 5-1 run to take a 7-3 lead. Back-to-back attack errors allowed MSOE back within two, 7-5, but three straight Augie points bumped their lead up to five, 10-5. The Raiders would take the next four points however to cut the Viking lead down to one. A service error ended that spree, but MSOE used a kill to stay within one, 11-10.

 

After two points went to Augie, the Raiders managed to tie the set after a pair of kills and an Augustana attack error. That tie quickly turned into a 16-13 lead for the Vikings, who then held off multiple attempts by MSOE to tie it until the score read 17-16, Vikings. 

 

A trio of points brought Augie to point 20 and a four point lead. But a 5-0 MSOE run tied things and then put the Raiders in front, 21-20. Augustana would shoot ahead to lead 22-21 before a 3-1 Raider spree brought the Raiders to set point, 24-23. Lichthardt managed to force extra volleyball with a kill, but MSOE took the next pair of points to clinch set three and give them a 2-1 match lead. 

 

Fourth Set

Facing defeat, Augustana started set four by claiming the first four points. MSOE cut that lead in half, but another three Augie points built them a 7-2 advantage. A service error ended that run for the Vikings, but they bounced back with another pair of scores that jacked the Augie lead up to six, 9-3. 

 

After both teams scored another point, MSOE grabbed seven straight points to suddenly lead Augustana, 11-10. Back-to-back Raider errors put the Vikings in front again, and then the teams traded scores until it was 17-16. From there, another two Viking points set their advantage back at three, 19-16. The squads returned to swapping points until it was 21-18 when consecutive Viking scores gave them a four-point advantage, 22-18. 

 

MSOE went on a 3-1 run to come back within two, 23-21, before they committed an attack error to bring up set point for the Vikings. Lichthardt struck once again to seal the set win for Augie, 25-21, and force set five. 

 

Set Five

In the first-to-fifteen set five, the teams split the first six points to make it 3-3. MSOE would take the next trio of points to double up Augustana 6-3, but an Elle Jones kill ended that run. However, Jones' kill would be Augie's final point of the match, as nine straight points went to the Raiders on their way to a 15-4 set five win and 3-2 match win.

 

GAME TWO - UWP 3-2 AUGIE

• Lichthardt followed a strong game one with a team-high 16 kills in game two of the doubleheader. 
• Niya Mincheva took over assists duty with her team-leading 22.
• Jones and Alita Folkening were stout at the net for Augie, each collecting two total blocks. 

 

How it Happened

 

First Set

UWP jumped out to a 4-1 lead in set one before a 3-1 Augustana run cut the lead to one, 5-4. A 4-1 Platteville run threatened to blow the game open, but three straight kills made the deficit one again, 9-8. After falling into a three-point deficit again, four straight points from the Vikings flipped the lead to them, 12-11. 

 

Platteville retook the lead, 13-12, momentarily before another 3-0 Augie spree gave the Vikings a multi-point lead. Four of the next five volleys ended in the Pioneers' favor however to put them in front again, 17-16. The next big run came with UWP on top 18-17, when four straight points went the way of Augustana to give them a 21-18 lead.

 

A Platteville kill interrupted that run before another two Viking points made it 23-19 and forced a UWP timeout. Out of the break, the Pioneers grabbed one more score, but a kill and attack error gave Augie the two points they needed to clinch set one, 25-20. 

 

Second Set

The start of set two belonged fully to the host school, as they rocketed to a 7-1 lead. A Carmela Carbone score put a pause on the Pioneer momentum, but another three UWP points led to an Augie timeout as UWP now led 10-2. The timeout proved fruitful for the Vikings, who scored the first five points out of the break to cut their deficit down to three, 10-7. 

 

Eventually, the Vikings clawed back within one, 13-12. That close score was short lived however, as an 8-0 run from UWP put them way in front, 21-12. Augie attempted to swing momentum back in their favor with back-to-back scores, but the final four volleys ended in Platteville's favor as they claimed a dominant set two, 25-14, and tied the match at 1-1. 

 

Third Set

Set three more closely resembled set one early, as the teams found ties at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4. Two straight UWP points gave the Pioneers some breathing room as the teams then split the points until it was 12-10 with Platteville still in front by two. The Pioneers then built on their lead with three straight points until their advantage was 15-10.

 

A UWP attack error ended their spree, but a 5-0 run soon built them a commanding 20-11 lead. Once the score reached 21-12, Augustana took four straight points to shrink the deficit to five, 21-16. The Vikings then committed consecutive attack errors and a Platteville service ace brought them to set point, 24-16. 

 

The Vikings managed to put another pair of points on the board thanks to two Sommesi kills, but a final UWP kill ended set three 25-18 in their favor, giving the home squad a 2-1 match lead.

 

Fourth Set

The beginning of set four was tight, with neither team leading by multiple points until Augie built a 5-3 lead. UWP quickly tied it at 5-5 however, and neither team could find a solid lead as they battled to an 8-8 score. Three straight Viking points finally gave Augie some breathing room, 11-8. But a 4-1 Platteville run knotted things up again at 12-all. 

 

After Augustana grabbed another two-point lead, four straight Platteville scores put them in front by a pair, 16-14. Then Augie went on a 4-0 run of their own to regain their two-point lead. But that lead soon reverted back to a tie at 19-19. Eventually, UWP took a 22-21 lead, just needing three more scores to seal the match. But Augustana closed the door on that possibility, scoring the final four points of the set, thanks in large part to two Sommesi service aces, to win 25-22 and set up Augie's second set five of the afternoon.

 

Fifth Set

Set five quickly leaned toward UWP, who took a 4-1 lead. But Augie grabbed three-straight points to even the set at 4-4. A 3-1 run by UWP put them up by a pair, 7-5, which eventually turned into a 10-7 advantage for the home team. 

 

From there, Augie struggled to put a run together, failing to score consecutive points for the rest of the set. A service ace was the nail in the coffin for the Vikings, who fell in set five 15-9 and in the match, 3-2.
