Frere headlines record-setting day at Augustana Penultimate Qualifer

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Competing on their home track once more, the Augustana Vikings men's and women's track and field teams turned in an incredible, record-shattering performance at the Penultimate Qualifier inside the Austin E. Knowlton Athletic Complex.

The Vikings were dominant in the throwing events, led by another big-time performance from Charlotte Frere, who uncorked a discus throw of 56.59m (185-08). The throw not only launched her to the No. 1 spot in Division III in 2026, but also shattered the 34-year-old national record of 55.02m, set by Kristin Kuehl in 1992. Continuing her landmark day, Frere also added a personal best in the hammer throw at 49.91m (163-09). In the women's hammer, Laina Nelson delivered a personal best toss of 47.34m (155-03), moving into the national top-100 rankings, while Amelia Miller placed second in the javelin with a mark of 35.49m (116-05).

On the men's side, Landon Wierenga swept the throwing competitions, winning the hammer throw with a mark of 61.28m (201-00) before adding a fourth-place finish in the discus at 49.65m (162-10). Magnus Wells added a meet-record performance in the javelin at 56.60m (185-08), while Micah Bischoff recorded a personal best of 49.58m (162-08) in the hammer throw.

The hurdle crew once again turned in one of the strongest performances of the meet behind AJ Banks. Banks opened the evening by breaking the meet record in the 110m hurdles prelims with a time of 14.49 before matching that mark in the finals to claim the event title. He later added another victory in the 400m hurdles, crossing in 53.96 to move to No. 53 nationally in Division III this season. Augustana swept the top three spots in the 110m hurdle finals, with Bayley Pierce taking second in 15.34 and Brayden Veil finishing third in 15.68. Elijah Lara added a fourth-place finish at 15.86.

In the women's sprints, Jordyn Van Santen highlighted the night with a meet-record victory in the 400m, clocking a personal best time of 57.17. Van Santen later added another personal best in the 200m at 26.44. Khaliah Knox posted personal best performances in both the prelims and finals of the 100m, running 12.67 before lowering it to 12.63 in the finals. Leila Sifford also turned in a personal best in the 100m prelims at 12.75 while adding a second-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 11.23m (36-10.25).

On the men's sprint side, freshman Darin Pentsil led the way with a personal best 11.00 in the 100m finals before adding a fourth-place finish in the 200m at 22.29. Luke Smith qualified for the 100m finals and later added a meet-record mark of 6.87m (22-06.50) in the long jump. Jad Massouh also recorded a personal best in the 200m with a time of 23.24.

The distance events saw multiple Vikings post strong performances. Sammy Lehr captured the women's 1500m title with a meet-record and personal best time of 5:06.42. Adam Miller finished runner-up in the men's 800m with a personal best of 1:57.02, while Ben Milner and Tyler Weber each recorded personal bests in the 1500m at 4:15.24 and 4:15.76, respectively.

In the field events, Tatum Rogers cleared a personal best 4.46m (14-07.50) in the pole vault to place third, while Presley Winters moved into the national top 100 with a clearance of 3.48m (11-05.00) in the women's pole vault. Ben Kama Kama added a runner-up finish in the high jump after clearing 1.92m (6-03.50).

Augustana also saw strong relay performances throughout the evening. The men's 4x400 relay team of Massouh, Prestin Stabler, Pentsil and John Adeniran finished second in 3:36.31, while the quartet of Milner, Jose Gomez, Weber and Liam Storie placed third in 3:43.97. On the women's side, the relay team of Rosa de Lima Arroyo, Aniela Ehrlicher, Nicole Hoffman and Lilliana Jaeger captured the event title in 4:26.39.

The Vikings wrap up the regular season next week as they host the Augustana Midwest Twilight Qualifier, welcoming more than 100 schools and programs from across the country. The two-day meet is set for May 13–14.
