Track and Field posts strong performances at the Meet of Champions

ROCK ISLAND – Competing on its home track, the Augustana Vikings turned in a strong two-day showing at the Augustana Meet of Champions on April 17–18, highlighted by event titles and several top-three finishes across the men's and women's competitions.

On the women's side, Charlotte Frere delivered one of the top performances of the meet, winning the discus with a personal-best throw of 53.92 meters. She also added a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw at 48.01 meters. Laina Nelson added another event win for the Vikings, taking first in the javelin with a throw of 39.73 meters, while Amelia Miller followed with a fifth-place finish and a personal-best mark of 36.31 meters.

In the distance events, Rosa de Lima Arroyo led a one-two finish in the 10,000 meters, winning the event in 45:49.22, with Nicole Hoffman finishing second in 46:08.40. In the jumps, Leila Sifford placed second in the triple jump (11.53m), while Liz Hayes followed in fourth (11.27m). Sifford also added a 10th-place finish in the long jump. On the track, Augustana posted a pair of top-three relay finishes. The 4x400 relay team of Jordyn Van Santen, Bridget Hecker, Cora Deemer, and Marie Weber placed third in 4:08.94, while the 4x100 relay of Leila Sifford, Hecker, Deemer and Van Santen finished sixth in 50.78. Individually, Van Santen added a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters (1:01.35), while Norah Wright and Luniah Gilford posted personal-best efforts in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.

On the men's side, Landon Wierenga led the way with a win in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 62.12 meters. Magnus Wells added a fourth-place finish (56.47m) and placed eighth in the shot put. 
In the jumps, Luke Smith turned in a runner-up finish in the long jump (7.11m), while Ben Kama-Kama also placed second, clearing a personal-best 1.95 meters in the high jump.

Tyreke Fortney led the sprint group, clocking a wind-aided 10.49 in the prelims before placing third in the 100-meter final with a time of 10.68. 
Bayley Pierce added an eighth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, while Conner Calhoun placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. In the distance events, Isaac Schuda led the Vikings with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters (33:21.22), while Jaden Gocken followed in sixth (33:57.85). The Vikings also added a top-five finish in the 4x400 relay, with the A team placing fifth in 3:31.95.

Both the men and women are back in action April 23-24 at Simpson College, in the Kip Janvrin Open.
