PLATEVILLE, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings track & field program turned in a series of strong performances across both the men's and women's sides, with multiple event victories and several top finishes at the UW-Platteville Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
On the women's side, the Vikings were powered by a dominant showing in the distance events and a standout performance in the throws.
Elizabeth Lawton led a clean sweep of the 5000 meters, crossing the line first in 20:19.87, followed by
Allison Price,
Rosa de Lima Arroyo, and
Nicole Hoffman as Augustana claimed the top four spots in the event.
In the field,
Charlotte Frere delivered one of the top marks of the weekend, winning the discus with a throw of 48.02 meters while also placing ninth in the shot put.
Laina Nelson added a third-place finish in the javelin at 41.28 meters. On the track, the 4x100 relay team of
Leila Sifford,
Bridget Hecker,
Cora Deemer, and
Luniah Gilford placed eighth, while the 4x400 relay of Hecker, Deemer, Jordyn VanSanten, and
Marie Weber finished sixth in 4:05.23. VanSanten also added a 10th-place finish in the 400 meters.
On the men's side, Augustana found success across both track and field events, highlighted by a pair of event wins and several top performances.
Landon Wierenga led the way in the throws, winning the hammer with a mark of 59.59 meters and adding a fourth-place finish in the discus (46.02m). On the track,
Adam Miller paced a strong distance group with a first-place finish in the 5000 meters (16:00.41), while
Christian Haywood placed second and
Emiliano Almendariz finished fourth.
AJ Banks added a pair of top finishes, taking second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.61) and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (56.14), with
Bayley Pierce close behind in fifth (56.29). The 4x100 relay team of
Bryce Jackson,
Tyreke Fortney,
Ryan Schmidgall, and
Mohamed Benbrahim placed fourth in 42.81, while
Collin Ferry added an eighth-place finish in the pole vault (4.16m).
Augustana returns to action April 17–18, hosting the Augustana Meet of Champions.
