Vikings swept on Senior Day

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Less than 24 hours after picking up a pair of wins on Friday night, Augustana College women's volleyball (8-14, 1-5) was in action on Saturday when they hosted Central College (13-11, 0-4) for Senior Day and the finale of the Augustana Invitational. While Augie was right there with Central in the first two sets, they could not clinch either before dropping set three to be swept.

Inside the Box Score

How it Happened

First Set

While Augie jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the match, Central came back to tie the set at 4-4. However, a massive 6-1 run by the Vikings put them well back in front of Central, 10-5. Central did respond in kind, taking five of the next six scores to pull back within one. While back-to-back Augustana points reestablished a multi-point lead for Augie, Central soon pulled back within one, 15-14.

An extended Augustana run of five points once again put some distance between the two squads, and, while Central scored to end that run, the Vikings tacked on another two points to take a commanding 22-15 lead. However, it was all Central until the end of the set. Three straight points from the visitors made it a four-point game, and, following one more Augie score, Central ended the set with seven points in-a-row to steal set one, 25-23.

Second Set

Similar to set one, the Vikings jumped out to a solid lead early in set two, taking a 5-2 lead. After swapping points for a while, consecutive Augie scores bumped their lead up to four, 9-5. Central responded by taking three of the next four volleys to close the gap to two, but a 5-1 Augustana spree enlarged their lead to six, 15-9.

Three consecutive Central points shrunk the difference to three, and the teams then swapped scores until Augie's lead sat at 18-14. Central then began a run of four straight points to eventually tie Augustana at 18-18. After tying each other at 19- and 20-all, and attack error put Central in front, 21-20. But Augie soon reached set point thanks to a 4-1 run. Once again though, Central swiped victory away from Augie as they took the final four points of the set to win it 26-24.

Third Set

This set was all Central to start. The visitors scored the first four points out of the gate on their way to a 9-3 lead. Augie struggled to put a run together, only grabbing points one-at-a-time as Central built an 18-7 advantage. Here, the Vikings finally managed back-to-back points, but a 5-2 Central spree quickly made it 23-11. Augie did score three straight points to pull within nine, but Central scored the final pair of points to win the set 25-14 and the match, 3-0.

Up Next

Augie now enters the home stretch of the season. Their penultimate conference game takes place on Friday, Oct. 30, when they visit Millikin at 7 p.m.
