WAUKESHA, Wis.  - After picking up a non-conference win on Tuesday, Augustana College women's volleyball (6-11, 1-4) traveled to The Badger State on Friday for a CCIW match against Carroll University (14-10, 3-1). The Vikings were unable to gain much momentum in any set, getting swept 3-0.

How it Happened

First Set

The squads split the first six points of the set to work up to a 3-3 tie. Carroll then rattled off five scores to shoot up to an 8-3 lead. Augie did not back down however, scoring four straight to pull back within one. A 5-1 run by the Pioneers put them back up by five before back-to-back Augustana scores made it 13-10.

Another strong Carroll run of 5-2 gave them a six-point advantage, their largest of the set up until that point. Consecutive Augie points closed the gap a little, but five Carroll scores in a row made it 23-14 swiftly. The teams then traded points back and forth until Carroll hit the 25-point mark to take set one, 25-16.

Second Set

Set two opened with a 2-2 tie, but, similar to set one, a lengthy Carroll run of four points built them a comfy 6-2 lead. Augie did take four of the next five points to make it a one-point game, but a monster nine-point spree by the Pioneers made it a 10-point difference, 16-6.

Augustana took two of the next three volleys to make the deficit single digit again before a pair of Carroll scores bumped their lead up to 11. The difference stayed right around 11 until another set of Pioneer points gave them a 12-point lead, 22-10. After Augie worked their way back within 11, Carroll finished the set with back-to-back points to win 25-12.

Third Set

While the Vikings struck first in set three, Carroll quickly jumped out to a 5-1 lead. A 5-1 response by Augie eventually tied things up at 6-6, but five-straight points from Carroll put the home squad up 11-6. A Jones kill ended that run before the Pioneers resumed it with another three consecutive scores.

Down by seven, Augie scored on back-to-back volleys to cut their deficit to five. Each team then had a three-point run to keep the difference at five. While the Vikings managed to get back within four of the Pioneers, a 4-0 spree by Carroll made it 22-14. Both squads then scored back-to-back points, bringing Carroll to set point, 24-16. Augustana scored another pair of points to keep their match hopes alive, but a final Carroll kill ended set three 25-18, securing the sweep for the Pioneers.

Up Next

It is a quick turnaround for Augie as they are right back at it on Saturday, Oct. 17, with a 12 p.m. matinee at Aurora.
