Five individual champions crowned at Windy City Rumble

CHICAGO -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's indoor track and field teams turned in a strong outing at the Windy City Rumble, hosted by the University of Chicago. The Vikings claimed five individual event victories on the day while adding several podium finishes. The women's team placed third overall, while the men finished fourth in the team standings.

Augustana opened the meet with solid efforts in the distance events. In the women's 5,000 meters, Keira Nelson finished second in 18:47.31, followed closely by Ryan Jednachowski in third at 18:51.75. On the men's side, Isaac Schuda placed fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:08.03, while Jaden Gocken followed in 16:20.22. Ben Gricius added a fifth-place finish in the 3,000 meters, running 9:14.63, and Daniel Prochaska placed fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.68. Norah Wright also contributed a fifth-place finish in the women's 800 meters.

The Vikings found their footing on the track in the sprint events, highlighted by two event wins on the women's side. Marie Weber captured first place in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.17. Bridget Hecker added another victory in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 26.15, while Leila Sifford followed in second at 26.69 and Cora Deemer placed fourth in 27.05. Deemer and Hecker also reached the finals of the 60 meters, finishing fifth and sixth respectively. AJ Banks led the men in the 400 meters with a third-place finish in 52.64.

In relay action, the women's 4x400-meter A team finished second overall with a time of 4:06.12, while the B squad placed fifth at 4:24.45. The men's 4x400-meter relay team also turned in a strong performance, finishing in 3:30.85.

The throws group accounted for two of Augustana's event victories. Charlotte Frere won the women's weight throw with a mark of 16.09 meters and later added a strong showing in the shot put with a throw of 12.00 meters. On the men's side, Magnus Wells claimed first place in the weight throw at 18.49 meters, while Landon Wierenga placed third and Evan Santilli finished fourth. Wells also earned a second-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 14.86 meters.


Augustana closed the day with more success in the jumps, as Luke Smith captured first place in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.76 meters. Caden Eller followed with a fourth-place finish in the event and later placed fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.87 meters.


The Vikings will continue their indoor season at the Wartburg Select, a two-day meet on February 6-7.
