Women's wresting dominates Fred Johnson Duals

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's wrestling team defeated the Carthage Firebirds and Upper Iowa Peacocks on Saturday at the Fred Johnson Duals. The Vikings picked up a 28-15 win over the Firebirds before a big 43-1 victory against the Peacocks.

In the first matchup against Carthage, Mia Vazquez kicked off the dual with a 6-0 decision in the 103 weight class to grab the early lead for Augie. The Firebirds secured the 110 category before Hannah Suboni-Kaufman collected a win at 110 with a decision to even the matchup at 6-6. Carthage regained the advantage after wins in the 117 and 124 weight divisions. Moni Griffin turned the scoring back to the Vikings' favor after a 10-0 technical fall at 131. Bri Bynum snatched the lead after a 14-4 technical fall to make a 15-14 score. The Vikings grabbed the final three weight classes with Aine Moffit and Maryam Ndiaye collecting technical falls. Angie Guy closed the dual with a pin in the 207 weight class to seal the 28-15 victory.

Against Upper Iowa, Augie secured the first seven weight classes on forfeits to lead 35-0. Ndiaye got her second win on the night with a 7-2 decision, and Guy pinned her second opponent of the day to help the Vikings claim the Peacocks 43-1. 

With the two wins, Augie improves to 4-3 on the season and will be back in action on Jan. 9-10 for the D3 National Duals in Cedar Falls.
