ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's wrestling team defeated the Carthage Firebirds 28-24 and Westminster Bluejays 53-0, but fell to the Millikin Big Blue 30-17.
In the dual against Carthage, the Firebirds secured the 125 weight class before
Tyson Bruce pinned his opponent in the 133 weight division to pull Augie ahead 6-3. The teams traded wins in the following two categories, with the Vikings' wins coming from
Trevion Gilford in 149 with a 17-5 major decision, and
Jack Miller pinned his opponent at 165 to make a 16-15 score. The Firebirds pulled ahead after two straight victories before
Braiden Young and
Teke Nieto closed the dual with wins in their respective categories by falls to seal the 28-24 win.
Against Westminster, Augie secured all weight classes, starting with
Jack Reina, who received a forfeit in 125. Bruce and
Jaylen Clayton grabbed decisions in their respective weight class to create a 13-0 score. Gilford earned a forfeit, and
Gianni Panozzo followed with a 19-3 technical fall in the 157 weight division to pull ahead 24-0. The Vikings followed with three forfeits to create a 42-0 score. Young grabbed a 16-1 technical fall before Riley Steinkuehler closed the dual with a fall at 285 to claim the undefeated victory with a score of 53-0.
In the matchup against Millikin, Reina grabbed the early lead after a pin, but Millikin followed with the next four weight categories to lead 12-6. Miller followed with a 16-0 tech fall to get within one point at 12-11. The Big Blue claimed the 174 class, and
Conor Phelan pinned his foe at 184. Millikin secured the final two matchups to close the dual 30-17.
With the 2-1 record, Augie moves to 3-7 on the season and will be back in action on Wednesday for a dual against St. Ambrose.
