ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's wrestling team finished third on Sunday at the CCIW Championships after tallying 106.5 team points, which is good for a program best.
Aine Moffit conquered the 138 weight class to be the Vikings' first conference champion in program history. Moffit earned victories over opponents from ranked teams, starting with a pin against Aurora in the first round. The senior followed with two 7-2 decisions against her foes from North Central to earn the highest spot in the division.
Moni Griffin placed third in the 131 weight category and added 10 points to the team's total. Griffin earned a bye in the first round before defeating her opponent from Elmhurst by fall. The junior moved to the consolation bracket after falling to the No. 4 foe from Aurora. Griffin defeated teammate
Lanie Cecala to move to the third-place matchup, where she pinned North Central. Cecala later finished fifth in the weight division.
Gia Ritter earned a third place metal at 145 with a 3-1 record. The sophomore earned a 10-0 technical fall in the first round before dropping to North Central. In the consolation bracket, Ritter collected two decisions against Illinois Wesleyan and teammate
Kelly Ladd to claim third. Ladd placed fourth after the matchup against Ritter.
Maryam Ndiaye stood third on the podium in the 180 weight division after an 11-0 technical fall in the opening round. The sophomore moved to the consolation bracket after a loss to the No. 5 wrestler from North Central. Ndiaye closed the event with a 13-0 technical fall over Illinois Wesleyan and claimed third after pinning her opponent from Elmhurst.
Moffit, Griffin, Ritter, and Ndiaye earned all-conference honors for their performances at the event. Additionally,
Gwen Burbridge was named the CCIW RESPECT Award Recipient.
The Vikings will be back in action on Feb 7-8 to host the D3 National Invite.
