Men's and women's track & field teams conquer Hilltop Invitational

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's track and field teams complete the Hilltop Invitational on Saturday. The women's team finished first out of eight teams, while the men were victorious out of seven teams. 

For the women, Khaliah Knox qualified in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.78 before dropping down to 9.70 in finals. Jasmine Kenney and Bridget Hecker earned personal bests in the 60-meter prelims before Kenney bested her previous time to come out victorious in the event, while Hecker crossed third. 

Hecker placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.41, while Marie Weber earned a season best of 2:28.09 in the 800-meter race to finish third. In the 200-meter event, Jordyn Van Santen finished second at 27.74, while Cora Deemer followed in fourth with a time of 27.85, and Luniah Gilford secured fifth at 27.90.

In field events, Rhiannon Marshall finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.46 meters. In the pole vault, Grace Gillespie and Presley Winters earned personal bests with 3.15 meters to place second and third. Leila Sifford jumped 4.79 meters in the long jump to earn second, while Kenney followed in third at 4.74 meters. In the triple jump, Kenney secured a personal best of 10.62 meters to place second.

Luniah Gilford, Paige Stevens, Natalie Steva, and Grace Millington conquered the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:54.68. In the 4x400-meter relay, Hecker, VanSanten, Deemer, and Weber clocked in second at 4:10.11.

Charlotte Frere secured a personal best of 15.26 meters to secure the victory in the weight throw. Frere followed with another personal best in the shot put with a personal best of 12.36 meters. 

On the men's side, AJ Banks finished the 60-meter hurdles prelims race at 8.54 before crossing the line at 8.58 in finals. Brayden Veil moved up two placements in the finals with a time of 8.68. Tyreke Fortney finished first in the 60-meter prelims with a time of 7.01 before dropping more time in finals with a time of 6.91. 

In the mile, Milo McLeer clocked in a time of 4:29.39 to place fifth. In the 400-meter race, Mohamed Benbrahim clocked in a time of 52.58 for fourth, while Daniel Prochaska earned a personal best of 52.96 to follow in fifth. Ben Milner clocked in a time of 2:02.49 in the 800-meter race to finish second. In the 200-meter race, Fortney clocked in second at 23.00, while Sam Kitzman placed fifth with a time of 23.23.

Prestin Stabler, Bryce Jackson, Hunter Reynolds, and John Adeniran placed third in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:35.85. In the 4x400-meter relay, Benbrahim, Banks, Kitzman, and Vook crossed the finish line third with a time of 3:30.34. 

In field events, Caden Eller jumped 1.90 meters in the high jump to place third and later conquered the long jump with 6.58 meters. Also in the long jump, Luke Smith secured a distance of 6.53 meters to earn second.  In the pole vault, Tatum Rogers earned a personal best with a 4.15 meters to finish second. Gerard Cabrera Espinach finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 11.85 meters. 

Magnus Wells found a season best of 18.42 meters to seal the victory in the weight throw, and Landon Wierenga followed with 17.79 meters for second. Wells later finished fourth in the shot put with a season best of 14.59 meters. 

The Vikings had three event winners, with 71 points coming from springs and relays. Both teams had 23 lifetime bests and four new all-time top 10 marks. 

The Vikings will be back in action on Jan. 31 for the Chicago Invitational hosted by Concordia-Chicago.
