MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's and women's wrestling teams competed at the Mike Duroe Invite on Saturday. The women's team had three athletes finish in the top five, while the men had one.
For the women,
Aine Moffit finished second in the 138 category after a big first-round victory over foe from Iowa by a 10-0 technical fall. The senior picked up two pins in the next two rounds against Wartburg and Buena Vista to move to the semifinals. In the next round, Moffit secured a 4-2 win against teammate
Bri Bynum to move to the champion round. The senior fell to a ranked opponent from Iowa to finish second.
Bynum placed fourth at 138 after winning the first two rounds, starting with a 12-2 technical fall over Central. The sophomore followed with a pin against Northern Michigan before falling to Moffit in the semifinals. In the third-place matchup, Bynum lost to Iowa to finish fourth. In the 131 weight class,
Moni Griffin finished in fifth after a first-round loss to move to the consolation bracket. The senior followed with a 4-0 decision against Central Methodist before back-to-back technical falls. In the fifth-place matchup, Griffin pinned her foe from Simpson to seal fifth.
On the men's side,
Braiden Young finished fifth in the 197 weight class after a win over St. Ambrose by a technical fall in the opening round. The senior moved to the consolation bracket after a loss against Augsburg, where he defeated his foe from Loras in a 2-1 decision. After a 6-3 decision, Young battled in the fifth-place dual and won by a 6-5 decision.
Conor Phelan secured two matchups, pinning both of his opponents in the 184 weight division.
The women's team will return to action on Jan. 25 for the CCIW Championships, while the men's team will compete in the CCIW Duals on Jan. 23.
